So I went a little wild at weapon outfitters the other day while getting parts to finish an A5 build & I picked up a Springco red ‘enhanced power’ buffer spring.   Currently I’m running it with a H1 weight in a 16” carbine length system upper.  Am I good with this or do I need to now upgrade it to a H2 buffer?

Thanks for your advice!

Edit for clarity & to fix spelling

Maybe I'm mistaken here, but you said you are doing an A5 build. Does this mean you are using Vltors A5 buffer system? If so, Sprinco recommends their Green spring and the buffer should be marked A5H? I'd start with the A5H2, shoot it and see where your brass lands and how it feels. If the brass is behind you, bump up to an A5H3 and repeat.
If you aren't using the A5 system, the H1 is a good place to start with. I personally use an H2, but either works. Let the rifle tell you what it needs, just listen though.

Hey, thanks for the response.  You weren’t mistaken, my post wasn’t clear.   I bought the green springco & a5h2 for a 18” build and also picked up the red Springco for my 16” carbine.   Thanks for letting me know I should be good with a h1 weight, I wasn’t sure if I needed to upgrade to a h2 or not due to the extra power spring.

Unless your 16" carbine is significantly overgassed, a Sprinco Red is really not necessary. Not saying it won't work, but it's a pretty stiff spring - more suited to an overgassed 10.5" than a typical 16". Depending on your gas port size, there is a chance it will short stroke, or won't be entirely reliable.

As far as Sprinco springs go, a Blue combined with an H1 or H2 would probably be better suited to the application.

Thanks.  I got the red since that’s what the Springco website says to use in 16” barrels with carbine gas systems.   Guess I’ll have to shoot it and find out.

If it doesn’t work then oh no... I’ve got to buy more ar parts.

Bingo.

Sprinco makes great stuff and they have a lot of experience with what works and what doesn't.

I do recall seeing that they recommend that spring with that combo so I think you will be good to go.

As always though, tolerances vary and every gun is different.

If it works and it probably will - great, and if if not then the blue spring would probably be the way to go.

Seems you're correct; they do recommend Reds for use with an H buffer in 16"+ carbines. Not exactly the approach I'd take, but that's probably a matter of preference. When tuning, I tend to stick with standard springs and only adjust buffer weight if possible. But, I'm guessing they wouldn't recommend it if it didn't work.

Personally, I think of Reds as a last option for very overgassed shorties that you've already maxed out on standard buffer weights (H3).  That being said, performance is about the same from a Sprinco Blue/H2 as from a standard carbine spring and H3. Based on their recommendation, I'd guess a Red with an H is going to be pretty similar to a Blue with an H2 (or H3 with a standard spring).

More than one way to skin a cat, I suppose :).

If you call Sprinco, they have a grooup of folks that'll go over what you have and what they reccomend for your rifle. They can also go over what other folks have done with respect to calibers, barrels, barrel length, gas systems, buffers..etc and get you off on the best foot possible. Great outitt really. Best of luck with your build!!

Thanks. I’ll give them a call Monday.   Anyone have advice on a good source of buffer weights or experience with the Spikes tungsten weights?

Looked at my box o’parts today and I’m damn close to enough parts for 2 more AR.  Pending buffers, stripped lowers, and muzzle devices.

For tungsten weights, either from KAK Industries (if you're ordering more than just weights), or Ebay. KAK really hits you for shipping as I recall, so I'd only go that route if you need other buffer parts like bumpers, spacers and so forth. If you're ordering just weights, Ebay is probably the way to go. I've purchased tungsten weights from this seller and everything was GTG:

Thanks for the idea.  Hate to sound like an idiot (but i may be).  But how do you put new weights in an existing buffer weight?  do you just need to drift the pin out?

Yes.  Punch out the 1/8" roll pin and pull out the plastic or rubber end cap (might need a bit of forceful pulling to get out).  You should have 3 weights (steel in a std. carbine buffer) and 3 rubber washers.  Don't lose the washers... they will protect the weights from crashing into each other as the weights move back and forth.
