...How was it done originally, and is there a tool available to do it on a new (non-staked) BCG?
I just don't like the "look" of the three center punch staking.

Do you want the square stake markings from the top and not the sides? If so, the MOACKS will not work for that.

I like the factory Colt square stake marks too.Don't know if I like it enough to pay $70 for the tool.We use a center punch because its fast and easy.I hardly ever have to go back and re stake either.

Looks to me like it's just a small chisel - same on the CAR endplate stakes.

You can grind down an old center punch to a square tip.

Wrong tool for the job.  This creates, IIRC, wedge shaped side stakes.

He wants a tool that will make square top stakes.

However I hear this is an excellent tool for staking keys if you don't care about having a the appearance of retro-rifle-stakes.

Yes I should've been more specific. The top staking is what I'm going for. My Young Mfg. chrome slickside BCG is the cat's ass, except for not being staked at all, so I want to stake it. The square staking just looks more "puffeshunal" than the round. I think I'll try Hal's tip and reshape one of my center punches to a chisel shape. Thanks!

How about a taper pin starter punch? It should be hard enough to do the job, but will it be soft enough to re-shape into a mini chisel? This is really bugging me, as you can probably tell by now, but I would really like to get it right the first time. Without ruining a bunch of tools or parts! What say y'all?
