Guys,
OK ... what grit aluminum oxide do you use with the Brownell's tool to square an upper? (600 or 800?) Is it OK to use silicon carbide rather than aluminum oxide? I have several grits of that already. How do you know you're done? Thanks! |

The silicon carbide stuff will embed but since the upper face is not going to see any movement there shouldn't be any issues with that.
The directions for the lapping tool used to say use aluminum oxide but now it says any lapping compound 180 grit...PDF So either will work .... I mainly use the 320 grit that Wheeler has in their silicon carbibe kit but I have used just the 600 before when the upper didn't look bad. ETA also go slow it doesn't take much effort or many revolutions ..... some people are able to achieve a good result just doing it by hand so keep that in mind if you decide to use a power tool. |
