My first born is a LEO patrol officer.
He is a great kid, and I want to show him my pleasure on how is doing.
He shoots left handed, and I am thinking of getting him the new Stag model 8L.

Any thoughts on this new piston rifle?
I know Stag has a good rep. just don't know about piston as I shoot all DI.
Thanks.

Pistons are great if you are shootig with a supressor and under 14.5" barrel plus your carrier group does not get as dirty as the DI system.  Is your son going to use this for work or pleasure.  If for work I would stay away from the left handed rifle my reason is if he needs to pick up a right handed one in any situation then he will be slower and a delay could be costly.  There are more right handed rifles in a department then the lefty so just shoot with the right handed rifle.

If its going to be for personal use then why not it would be a great gift.  I have not seen any info on reviews of the Stag with thousands of rounds fired for the piston.  Find out what he wants and go from there and it will surely be a great gift from dad.

As a lefty myself there isn't much advantage to a lefthanded ejecting AR that I have found and depending on the person and how they use the controls it can be a disadvantage. For instance for a lefty using a righthanded AR the forward assist on the right side of the receiver leaves them to use their thumb very quickly from their lefthand without having to shift grips much at all. Ambidextrous charging handles and safeties which are some of the main pluses for a lefty I've feel can be put on any AR.

A piston AR in normal non-supressed fire has very little to no gas blowback from the receiver to make it a problem and ejection can be anywhere from out and forward to over the shoulder. It's never been a problem that I've found and there is alot to commonality of the platform since pretty every AR he would come across to use or be issued will be righthanded.

If you want to get him a Stag Model 8 it's a nice choice, but the L model isn't necessary in my experience and only leaves more uncommon parts and builds indifference to other AR's out there. If your interested in a good price Gary Ruby at High Rock Outfitters has some Model 8's in stock and is selling them for $999 plus $25 shipping which is a hell of a price for one especially since they come with Midwest Industry front and rear BUIS's.

Hey thanks for the replies.
To clarify:
His PD currently issues Mini-14's
Several others have "approved" AR's (Sig) of which the Stag is one of them.
Sounds like I will go DI and then top it off with an Eotech 552. W/ BUIS.
Think I will try and talk him into a right handed version then, now that I think the Eotech can be used with both eyes.

I would top that sucker off with an Aimpoint and would take any model Aimpoint over an Eotech. I have personally observered 2 Eotechs on the firing line with the dead battery for no good reason defect.

I'm a lefty and prefer lefty rifles i own a dpms southpaw DI and i had a Stag DI which i got rid of since i want to get a piston upper when they finally release them.

i also built a 7.62x25 left handed upper using a dpms southpaw receiver and bolt may be the only one in existance  or at least the first.

i'm left handed and prefer to shoot a rifle made for me not those of those right handed people that there are too many of.

shooting right handed rifles i have had crude hit my glasses (good thing i was wearing them) have had hot shells hit the hood of my coat and land on my neck (im in oregon it rains a lot)  . if he shoots with both eyes open he may like not having that shell shooting across his face

I love my 8L, I really do. If for nothing else the 'brass distraction' crossing my path of vison. IMHO, I would ask your son which setup would work best for him. I would never claim to know it all, but I have been raised around firearms and I have a pretty good idea of what I like and don't like. Always learning from these forums.
