Hello Everyone,
I am just getting started I ordered a build your own ar book and I am just looking for some pointers on where to start and what are good products out there. If anyone has the patients to help me out that would be great. I want to buy good products from the beginning so I dont waste any money if at all possible. |

i was in your shoes about 12-15 builds ago. pretty much everything i learned could be found just reading old posts. if you can't find something specific then post a question, and it usually gets answered very quick.
there is a little learning curve, but there is a ton of info in these pages!!!! one of the harder things to do right now is to find parts that are in stock, but it can be done. good luck. and like the poster above stated, it depends a lot on what you want to do with it. look through the pic threads and decide what you like, and go from there. |

ok thankyou I am looking for something that I can go shoot varmits and I think i want a red dot sight like a holo sight and .223 other than that I dont really know. Unless you're shooting the 2-legged type varmints up close and personal, most varmint rigs run magnified optics since they're usually pretty small creatures that won't let you up close and personal for very long IF they do at all. Variable powers in the range of 4-16 power are a good starting point as they offer a little wider field of view over some of the higher power scopes out there without having to dial around your magnifications too much. My preferences start with Leupold and due to my wallet size, they pretty much stay there (Swarovskis and most of the other big European makers are hard to be beat if you can afford them...). For a stock, an A2 style works fine. I fill mine with those little grey balls people seem to like to shoot birds with. For a lower, I'm partial to these (Lower); as they have a take-up screw which allows a quick, relatively easy, self trigger job with a set of $20 springs and stock fire control parts you get with most parts kits. For an upper, I'm content with DPMS' LoPro upper. It's a slick-side job which is much thicker in the sidewalls than a typical A3/M4 upper. They make sense to me as to having more to support a free-floating/or bull or close heavy barrel. I don't need the ejection port cover as I don't plan on crawling in the sand or mud any time soon with my rig. Since most "varmint" type bullets available are in the 55gr range, 1-9 makes sense. Just my 1.25 cents... Good luck! |
