First time builing.
What are the parts/sections that you can save the most $$, without compromising on quality?

Which are the parts that are well worth spending a few extra bucks?

Thanks for any help!

ps if someone has a semi completed build that i could look at for reference, thatd be pretty life saving!

It's worth it to spend your money on it as you see fit.  In my opinion, its best to spend your money on a good barrel, bolt carrier group, and trigger.  Some will recommend a good receiver group, but I just used basic forged stuff and have been completely happy with them.

If I was trying to save money, I'd skimp on the stock and buffer assembly, the grip, the handguard, and just go with iron sights.  Those items can be swapped out in the future without too much trouble - except replacing the handguard may require removing the barrel and gas block.

If you just want something really basic, you can make it happen for around $400-500.  Jump up to $700 and you can have something pretty nice.  Keep on stacking benjamins and it only gets better.  If you want to save some cash on building it, though, you're best off just shopping sales until you get the parts you want.

What parts do you already have?

Buy a quality barrel, bcg, and trigger. Don't have to go crazy, just don't skimp there.

With receivers you have more leeway, imo. You can save cash there, just buy forged from a reputable source. Alot of it is personal preference. Blems will shave money, most times the blemish is not even noticeable.

Furniture/accessories are easily upgraded at a later date if you want. Shop the EE for used or takeoffs.

Consider the role this weapon will fill. And remember,  the $ you save on this build will probably be spent on your next.

Buy a Complete Lower from Palmetto State Armory & a rifle kit; the upper will be headspaced be & test fired, prior to shipment.

You'll already have the parts for your next lower & an example to use.

By "build"  do you mean assemble from loose parts entirely or buy an upper and assemble a lower?

Using a gift card you already have will save you from throwing cash, and the Ruger lower should be fine. The CMMG lpk is gtg, you can find them cheaper tho.

PSA does have great  budget uppers ready to pin on and shoot. Great option.

Decide how entailed you want to get, whether you want to invest in some assembly tools. It's definitely not hard to do.

Barrel Im thinking of. Wanted a shorter one, but Illinois requires 16".

and Id like to put the lower together myself, but its not a necessity.

Assembling a stripped lower takes all of about 30 minutes.
A few quick YouTube vids and you are a pro.

The upper that you linked should be gtg. Add a quality bcg and charging handle and you're set.

NFA regs mandate a 16" barrel across the board unless you SBR the lower.  Illinois may have specific laws, I am not familiar with IL. 14.5" and 14.7" barrels with a pinned/welded flashhider making the OAL 16"
are an option also.

For reliable function, an AR needs a good quality barrel assembly, BCG, buffer and springs. All springs are important, but especially extractor, hammer and action springs. You don't have to pay Gucci prices to get quality parts

Here are some links to check out.

Both of these will be much cheaper than the big box stores, and have great quality. Primary Arms has great customer service.
