Crummy pic but just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about here.
This is a steel sprocket that I got from work. It came off some sort of box manufacturing machine and measures 12" across and 7/16" thick and has to weight 4-6 pounds. After knocking out the bearing the center hole is 2" across.
Im thinking if i weld a chain at the 11 and 2 o'clock positions it could be hung 200-300 or so yards out as a reactive gong type target.
I'm wondering if anyone has an idea as to what kind of steel is used for this type of sprocket and would it be suitable for a reactive type gong
Someone else suggested I get another 1/4" or thinner steel plate and weld several 1/4" thick nuts to that and hang it in front of the sprocket so it lays losely on the sprocket so the welded nuts would keep it 1/4" off the sprocket. The 1/4" or thinner plate would break up the bullet making it do less damage to the sprocket and make more noise with every hit. Ya think  The 2nd plate would at least cover the 2" center hole.
Below is a pic of the 12" x 7/16" thick sprocket...

Anyone know of any online pics of gongs so i can see the set up arrangement?
Maybe a youtube.com video?

Thanks for your time.

You don't need to protect your gong, it's going to be just fine and you will hear it.  hang it like you said and put any ol scrap iron across the hole.  Every gong I've ever seen is less substantial then your sprocket.

An industrial sprocket like that has to be pretty strong hardened steel, and i'd bet it will take plenty of abuse

Should be OK as long as you stay away from 30-06 AP.

Don't weld on the attachment points - the welds WILL break. I finally gave up on that after my welds kept breaking after a couple of shots.

Drill a couple of holes and attach the chain that way.

Thats good to know in advance, thanks.

If you have access to a plasma cutter, it will be easier than drilling!

Make some sort of flapper target for the center, kind of like the head shot targets that flip from one side to the other. you could paint it orange and when you hit it it would flip to the outside to be shot again for reset.

Just tell people that you hit the 2" hole all the way out there because there was no gong sound....

Hmmmmmm..... I'm going to get my trusty M79. That just screams for a 40mm HEDP round!

This is a little off track but................here's a little project a buddy of mine and I made. Targets are made of .75" Thick 4140 steel. Diameters are 3" 2" 1.5" 1" and .75"
As you can see at the time of the picture only the 2" one was used.

We also hang a gong off of one side and a bowling pin on the other. I don't have any pictures of the gong but it is a 10" diameter 1/2" thick piece of D-2 Tool steel.
