I purchased the following target from E-Bay.

Steel Target

It was advertised as AR500 steel that could withstand rifle hits. I am glad to say that I have given it a proper workout with my RRA Predator Pursuit at 200+ yards and I have not so much as a scratch for my efforts. I also hit it with some .45 auto and .44 mag max loads at ~20 yards this evening and still not a dent. I got to admit, I am impressed. Tomorrow, I plant to hit it with some .204 Ruger and 22-250 varmint rounds and see how it stands up. So far, I am extremely impressed. Has anyone hit this target with .270 or .300 wby at +200 yards? Any damage?

Here it is after an onslaught and just before we re-painted.

FYI 3/8" will crater quite a bit with smaller high velocity rounds(5.56, .204, etc) fired at 100yds or less and eventually begin to look like a bowl. You'll get your $20 out of it for sure but 1/2" would be much better!

My buddy had a 5/8" steel blind that we shot with everything we could find, denting it with a few larger solids. What struck us as funny was when a friend hit it with some .17 Remingtons, metal was displaced badly. This was soft steel, but none of the pistol rounds nor most rifle rounds did much to it. High speed little bullets surprised us.
I guess speed kills

My gun club only allows paper targets anymore, I enjoyed shooting steel...

Alright, the gauntlet has been laid. In the morning, I am going to hit this target with .204 and 22.250 and see what the damage is. The only thing is, I am only shooting at 200+ yards with rifle calibers. I plan on sending some .270 and .300 wby if the lower calibers work out well.

I did some surfing and found a place in Texas thats pricing ain't too bad.I been wanting to get a AR500 8 Inch round and about 6 each plate rack 6 inch rounds,
some 1/2 size pepper poppers...I want to hit the steel with the AR at 200 yards and build some handgun stuff for my tactical range set up.

On a range I built and help run we used 3/8" on the pistol, .22  range but no 5.56 was allowed. At 200m a 1/2"swinging gong held up to centerfire rifle but was bowled, especially after I hit it twice offhand with a .458 . At three hundred meters the I/2" Jane Fonda silhouette took a real beating from everything but held up pretty well.

I have 1/2" AR500 that I've shot extensively with .308, 6.8, 5.56, .45ACP, 9mm, and .22LR from distances ranging from 10-200 yards and it's held up really well so far..If I had to guess, it's probably had over 12K rounds shot at it so far..

I have 3/8" AR500 plates at 100 and 200 yds. They stand up VERY well to almost ANYTHING at 200 yds...but one must be careful of the 100 yd plates.    Though 5.56/5.45x39 seem to be OK.

Few years back, DESPITE my asking him NOT TO use that rifle ... a local who uses my range to sight in....Used his .30-.378 Wby with 120 or 140 grain  Barnes X-Bullets to put HOLES in my 100 yd plate.

Velocity even from small , light slugs seems to be the deal.  With pistol or lower velocity riflles and carbines the 500 seems to hold up WELL.

You're correct, velocity is the key. High velocity in a small round will do more damage because it's exerting the force over a very small area. I've seen videos of guys hitting 1/2" AR500 with .338 and .50BMG, no problems at all.

Last time I was at the range a couple guys were skeptical of my 10" square, 1/2" AR500 plate so I let the guy w/ the most powerful rifle hit it. He shot it 6 times with a 174gr 7.5x55 Swiss @ 100yds. didn't even dent it. M855 did more damage(tiny little divot, smaller than a BB)!

This thread prompted me to get off the stick and get a 15 inch gong for the AR's on our little three-gun course, to go along with the falling plates for pistol that we built a few weeks ago, and the stick-supported clay pigeons for the shotties.

I bought this 15 inch diameter drilled 1/2 inch thick  AR500 plate for $80 from Quality Targets on ebay at 5 PM today and they sent me a FedEx tracking number about 45 minutes later.

These targets have been used and abused at a few of the ARfcom hometown shoots, several thousand hits with many
kinds of ammo and they still are holding up good.
I made them with 1 inch thick AR500

I built this this weekend...the steel plate in the center is mild steel about 3/8 inch..its at a angle and hinged to move when hit
The legs on bottom i can stand on it and sink it into the dirt to be stable....I am going to try 22LR on it first then my pistols.
I am not sure what AR500 plates to get yet for AR shoot'n...!

Looks pretty good!

It'll be just fine for pistol rounds and .22 but an AR will make swiss cheese of it after not-so-long. Go with 1/2" AR500 when you do.

+1 on that, seen it also, that is where your angled plates come in instead of hitting them head on perpendicular

I read one one website that sells AR500 plates that you should put some long bolts through the top mount holes and hang from the back far
end of the bolts so that the plate hangs at an angle....that would probably help.

Here are the results from the .204 and 22.250. It seems if you stay 200+ yards away, you are good to go. I shot about 50 rounds (yep, I repainted between volleys) and finally got one of the .22-250 rounds that hit right on the edge to make a deformation in the target. The lighter impacts below are 204 and the larger, darker impacts are 22.250.

Thanks to atnas. I wound up buying a steel setup from http://www.arntzentargets.com/
I bought the folding stand & the 2/3 IPSC plate.
Took it out today. It's a very good portable setup. Easy to transport in a car & setup. Very study as well. I ran 2 AR's & a AK. .223 silverbear, XM193, XM855, 7.62X39. The plate ate it up.  I'm going to be buy the full size IPSC plate in the near future.  I was setup at 75 yards. Furthest I can go is 100, but it was a bit muddy that far out. Didn't feel like getting stuck.
I can see some slight dimples, likely from the M855. I nicked the edges in a few spots, but other then that I think this setup will last. The stand is simple but effective. I am going to tape the legs a little though. I can see where fragments are hitting the legs.
It does have a nice ting sound when hit. Not like the Wideners plate I have where that's a thud sound.
