Guys, I am in the process of ordering ammunition, and I received a quote for Hornady 9754EL 55 grain "Steel Case" ammo. It is cheaper than the Remington quote I received, and the delivery date for the Hornady is much sooner. The question is are there any issues with this steel case ammunition? Does it wear on the weapons more than standard brass ammo (extractor etc.)? Any advice is appreciated ...... |
| I have over 5,500 rounds of Wolf steel case ammo through a Ruger Mini-30 with no problems other than Wolf quality control. I have found their .223 steel case ammo to have better quality control than the 7.62x39 (some hangfires and duds), never having a hangfire or dud in the .223. I have about 1,200 of this stuff through each of my two Mini-14s. I do not use steel case ammo in my AR15s however. |
| We got some of it here due to a mix up and it is what it is, practice ammo. Compared to wolf it is cleaner but we have had a few hard primers. Since several rifles failed to ignite primers on first strikes, I would say the primers are the culprit as these same rifles have never had problems with other ammo. |

Here is my take. The zinc coated ammo is good. I have both zinc and some of the later lacquer coated stuff. The lacquer coated stuff sucks and might as well be Wolf. The smell of fired laquer coated ammo is the same as Wolf. The zinc coated ammo did not have that smell. The lacquer coated ammo gave me feeding problems. The zinc coated burned clean. Lacquer coated was dirty. Oh,yeah. I also had some hard primers and the rounds did not fire. I was told by Hornady that the zinc stuff was a Russian steel case loaded with Hornady powder and components. I would bet that the lacquer stuff is all Russian, except perhaps for the bullet. The lacquer stuff also seemed less accurate. I am selling my lacquer coated lot and keeping the zinc coated lot. What does that say? |

From GT Distributors Hornady .223 Training Ammo (Lacquered Casing) In order to meet demands for training ammo, Hornady is putting out a lacquered version of the 9754 and 9760 training ammo. The ammunition is assembled in the USA with a lacquered steel Russian casing but the rest of the components are American made. We have tested this ammo and it performs beautifully. *.223 55 grain FMJ- #HORNADY-9754-EL $150.00/case of 500 $145.00/ case of 500 Federal Tax Exempt *.223 75 grain HPBT - #HORNADY-9760-EL $160.00/case of 500 $135.00/ case of 500 Federal Tax Exempt Available in both Box of 50 or Case of 500 quantities. 55gr Muzzel 100yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds 3100fps +1.6 0 -8.0 -24.6 75gr Muzzel 100yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds 2750 fps +1.5 0 -8.1 -24.1 |
What then? I mean, you can't just chuck it in the trash can right? Do you mail them the destroyed can and request a permit or whatnot for a new one? |
yes, I know what the ad says. I am telling you it smells like Russky ammo. The zinc version does not. Do you have this ammo? |
