So I got the nice partial fence XM16E1 lower, and it comes with a roll pin.

It says here, I can drive it in the hole if i want. ( paraphrased).

What was the "original" purpose of the (bloody)  roll-pin ?  Why is it now "obsolete ?

Thanks.

Kept the receiver extension tube from backing out. At least that was the perceived thought back then. Was eliminated and now NDS just installs the hole slightly lower and the roll pin is just for show.

Originally the hole was a tiny bit higher. You would screw the buffer tube into place, run a drill bit thru the hole and cut across the bottom of the tube and then run the pin into place. This locked the buffer tube into the receiver. Eventually it was found that this was an unnecessary assembly step and done away with.

damn! beat by 4 seconds!

early model rifles had the receiver extension tube (buffer tube) pinned in place to keep them from loosening up

ETA: I must type quicker next time
