Right now I have a RRA varmint AR, with a 20" heavy barrel.  I'm about to buy a mid length upper and use the same lower for both until I can afford to buy another lower and a PRS for the varmint.  My question is, which will be a better stock to use with both uppers for the time being.  Both will only be used for target shooting, varmint hunting, and just general shooting.  I'm looking at a  magpul UBR and ACS. I am a bigger guy so i like the extra length of pull of the ACS over the UBR (about an inch of extra overall length over the UBR).

Is it worth the extra money to get the UBR over the ACS?
what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
Which do yall recommend?

I have never held, nor seen either in person. so just looking for some advice from ppl who have seen them both.

I have both UBR and ACS on ARs. The ACS is quickly becoming my favorite stock, as it is nice and long (I'm a big guy too), sturdy, and not as heavy as the UBR. I like the UBR, as it is the adjustable stock that most closely simulates a full AR stock. For a longer, heavier target/precision oriented AR, I would pick the UBR. For most anything else other than a shorter or light weight, I feel the ACS would be better. You can add the Magpul enhanced butt pad for even more length and comfort to either.

The ACS has more storage and costs less.  It also uses a standard milspec or commercial buffer tube instead of a proprietary tube, so if you decide to change later you can just swap out the stock without changing the tube.

The UBR is stronger and heavier.  If you wanted to make the ACS heavier to better balance a front heavy upper you could add weights to the storage compartments.

If you get the ACS you have to add swivel inserts while the UBR comes with the inserts.

If i get the ACS is it "likely" or even possible that when I'm on a bench shooting the varmint upper that when I lean in to look through the scope that my cheek will be out in front of the cheek weld on the stock?  I have never seen either in person so i have no idea, that was one reason i was looking at the UBR is the fact that it has the constant cheek weld.

How close do you place your cheek? I do not find this the case with the ACS, or any of my stocks really. I do find the ACS to be the most comfortable, with the UBR a close second.

I am out of town right now and am not sure how close i place my cheek to actual upper, but when i get home i will measure it.   with the acs, at its longest position, what is the distance from the upper to where the cheek weld starts?

Do you currently use a standard AR stock? The ACS will be the same length as the others when fully extended, which is just over 3.75". If your preference is to place your cheek very close to the receiver, and you are worried, then maybe the UBR would be a better choice.
