Still building my first AR. I've had mixed reviews on what type of stock to buy mostly because of weight. Does every ounce really make that big of a difference? What stock would you buy? This is what I'm looking at now.

Depends. Are you just going from your vehicle to the firing line and back? Then no, weight is not very significant. Are you competing, hunting, hiking, or in some end-of-times scenario where you're on foot for extended periods of time? Then yes, weight may be an issue. ETA: The CTR is a pretty great stock. I've got 2. |

Check out the newer Magpul MOE SL stocks. I love them.
Also a fan of the B5 bravo/sopmods Out of those , including the CTR, the sopmod would weigh the most. But, I highly doubt you'd notice a difference in the other stocks. The magpul UBR and the PRS are the heavy ones |
| MFT Minimalist. Lightest out there, amazingly rugged, super simple (unlike others, it does not rely on springs/levers to remain tight. I uses an oval tube that squeezes onto the receiver extension. Nothing to wear out or break), and works great. Oh... and it's cheap too (easily found for under $45/shipped). It's now the only collapsible stock I'll use. |
| You might consider the weight-to-strength ratio before choosing a stock. Personally, I don't want anything too light or too heavy. Ounces add up, but put them where it makes sense. I recommend the Magpul SL stock, as it is their strongest stock (aside from the UBR). My second recommendation would be a VLTOR IMOD. |

Same here... and I put one on a .308 carbine. EXCELLENT stock. |
| The last dozen or so builds I have done have all had either the MP CTR or the MP MOE rifle stocks. They can take just about anything you can dish out to them and all of them are on rounds with a lot more recoil than the 5.56, namely .458 SOCOM, .475 TREMOR, .375 SOCOM, .400 SOCOM...well, you get the idea. They are not the lightest, but pretty damned light, and they do take a licking with impunity, and none of them have ever 'shot loose.' For when I want a fixed stock, like on my rifles with 24 inch barrels, they get the MOE rifle stock with the extended butt pad. |

And another vote for the Magpul MOE SL stock, (not the SL-K stock). Have it on 2 rifles so far and its become my favorite. It tight, nice handling, and nice looking to boot. |

Here's what I currently use on my carbines (with approx weights for comparison only):
Colt-Rogers SuperStoc 7.3 oz Magpul MOE 8.0 oz B5 Systems SOPMOD Bravo 8.3 oz Magpul CTR 8.8 oz Vltor IMOD 9.5 oz Vltor EMOD 14 oz I mostly balance the weight of my carbine front to rear, so when I have a light front I use a lighter weight stock. With my heavier medium contour and heavy weight barrels with rail systems I use my heavier stocks. There is also my personal preference, when using iron sights and red dot optics I prefer to use narrow stocks, when using magnified optics I prefer stocks with wider cheek pieces for better cheek weld and accuracy. |
