I have had some .223 ammo stored for about a year in an old ammo box, it seem that some moisture may have gotten to the magazines but none of the loose ammo inside. Several cartridges that were loaded in the magazines look to have some corrosion or oxidization so I was wondering if it is hazardous to shoot or should it be disposed of, and how? Also the mags seemed to have a white, chalky, build up at the weld seams.

Be careful how long you tumble the ammo!! if you do so for too long you break down the coating on the powder and accelerate the burn rate. This can cause dangerously high pressures when fired. Sorry Sir but this has been proven to be a myth. Many people have done experiments and the consensus is it's safe. I have tumbled German DAG 7.62 NATO that was very corroded and shot it through my FAL's without any noticeable increase in recoil etc. etc. |

I agree that tumbling is not as dangerous as vibrating and I am talking about for longer periods than a minute or two. I would be interested in seeing any data showing that it is safe to do so as I have only ever seen data (from powder manufactures) showing it not to be so. Obviously they are also considering their legal position when giving advice.
I am not disagreeing by the way simply, looking to expand my own information and learning should the articles I have read been either outdated or inaccurate. Casper |

Clean it up and shoot it. This. Or, don't even clean it up and just shoot it. As long as it's just surface oxidation and there is no pitting, you'll be good to go. I shot a thousand rounds of Argentine 7.62N surplus through my FAL with no problem. The cases were pretty heavily covered with oxidation. Probably the most accurate surplus .30 cal. I've shot. I tore 5 down and reassembled them after finding nothing wrong with the powder or case interiors. |
