Had a problem yesterday. First time I have ever had this happen. Right off the bat I had a tough time getting the rounds to chamber. Tried several rounds until finally it went all the in and I fired the gun. It was VERY loud when it went of and the magazine blew up. The extractor is broken. Now I cannot get the stuck case out the chamber.    |

Try a 40cal cleaning brush. insert on a rod, and pull out the case

Herters is steel case, not brass. Unless Herters is selling brass now, I think you are mistaken on what ammo you were using. Is your bore clear or is there a stove-piped round in your barrel? I know it sounds far-fetched, but do you own ammo in a caliber other than 5.56, that with a bit of effort could have been forced into battery on your AR? Is there any way that you already had a stove-piped round in there? Having trouble chambering a round and then having it blow when you do get one chambered, combined with the apparent fact that you were not in-fact using Herters ammo, sounds like there may be something more at work here than a standard case-head seperation. just my .02 |

OP glad your OK!
Based on the photo's me thinks a stuck case is probably the least part of your issues. Have your checked your lower receiver round the mag well for cracks? What happened to your gas tube? Hope I'm wrong, but looks like the last rodeo for that rifle. Relatively vague in your initial description, but sounds like bullet got pulled when trying to chamber a round and the projectile stuck in the bore. When you finally got one to chamber behind it, well there ya go. Herter's stuff has always seemed to run on the large side in my experience. I can see this happening. Let us know what you find. However in bottleneck rifle rounds such as .223 bullet setback will actually decrease pressure. Now I think that applies to regular seating depths. Idk if dramatic setback does or doesn't. |
| Let me guess .......as was said above....FORWARD ASSIST TO CHAMBER ROUND? I watched a guy, one day at the range beat on his forward assist everytime he tried to chamber a round with a clean gun and questionable ammo. Never saw a good outcome when a forward assist was needed. The one and only time I thought I needed to use a forward assist I got the round chambered then ripped the casehead off with my extractor when I fired. Round was out if spec., the whole box. So if a round will not chamber and there's not imminant danger of death or worse......drop the mag and remove the round. Screw the forward assist. |
