Hi,

I'm ramping up to ordering my first AR. I'm currently planning on a RRA lower, and a kit from either J&T or Del-Ton. My question is this... What other things do I need to complete my build and have a fully functional rifle? It never seems to fail that these "all-in-one" kits leave something out! I suspect that I'll probably need some special tools, some lubricant, and a magazine. Any suggestions on the type of lubricant? Are all mags made the same, or do some suck? Will i need anything besides the basic tools to put this together?

Thanks,

Aaron

If you are going to get a RRA lower, I would suggest that you get a RRA upper receiver too.  I don't know how the other upper mfgs fit the RRA lower but you will get a good fit with the matching the RRA lower and upper.

I just built mine from RRA parts as I had money.  I'm not sure that the kits are a good idea but what do I know?

A stock of some kind seems missing from the list as well as the correct buffer and spring. By "kit" I assume you mean a lower parts kit? These are usually complete, though you may wish to have an extra detent pin and spring, LOL.

Of course you'll need an upper. A built one is ready to go if it has a bolt carrier and bolt, otherwise you'll need these parts too. Bulding uppers requires a selection of specialized tools that you cannot do without. But this may be beyond the scope of your question...

As to tools, you'll need a good set of pin punches, a small hammer (brass is good, though any kind will work) tape to protect the finish of your lower when driving pins, a set of needle nose pliers for holding the pins while you tap them into place. CLP or lube of course. You may need some small files ir reamers, but this is not usually needed as most commercial lowers are really plug and play.

Have fun, take your time, and carefully follow the directions tacked a the top of the forum and you'll do just fine!

I was looking at something like this

the 16" m4 rifle kit. It's supposed to have everything in it....

Thanks,

Aaron

All you need is a screwdriver, needlenose pliers, a small punch, and duct tape or something to protect the receiver when installing the bolt catch roll pin.

This link will tell you all you need to know

Del-ton's kit should include everything but the tools and a magazine or two.  Not all mags are created equal.  Stick with a company that supplies US gov. issue mags and you should be ok.  I have had good luck with NHMTG and D&H mags.
