If I want an SBR, can't I just buy an AR pistol and put a stock on it?

And stay out of prison.

There is a Federal law that prohibits stocks on pistols. Certain guns, mostly antiques that originally came with them, are exempted, but newly-manufactured guns are prohibited from having stocks.

I know of no exemption for this.

If you do, you just manufactured an SBR.  NFA rules still apply.

Pay the money, do the checks, be patient, and then enjoy freely, out of prison.

If you buy a pistol it is illegal to:

1. put a stock on it, or any device that may be used as a stock

2.  Put a vertical fore grip or any device that may be used as a  VFG

3.  There is also a maximum leanth if I am not mistaken

any of these will be considered felonies

DING DING DING!!!!

To answer your originally stated question, yes, putting a stock on an AR pistol would create an SBR.  But to do it legally, you need to follow the appropriate legal course.  You complete the forms, submit them with the $200, wait a while and then get your tax stamp.  Then you can LEGALLY put the stock on the pistol.

I think that most of the other replies assumed you hadn't planned to do the required paperwork...

I had no plans of building anything illegally. That's why I posted my question on a public forum. I simply thought that it could possibly be done and I would ask people who know more about this than I do.

Can you SBR it not put a stock on it and put a vertical fore grip on ? Or is that a no no?

Yes, if you have a registered SBR from a pistol lower then you can add a stock & VG. If it's still just a pistol then you can have neither to remain legal.

That is an A.O.W. It is legal also if you do the proper paperwork, and pay the proper fees.

Isn't an AOW stamp cheaper than an SBR stamp?

The AOW stamp is $5 while it's $200 for all other NFA items provided they are legal in your AO.
