I haven't really used magnified optics.  I've mostly only shot Iron sights.

Would it be correct to say that if you have a 3X scope that the target will look 3x closer.  If you are looking at a target 100 yds away, will it appear the same size that it does at 33.3 yards with the naked eye?
Or if you have a 10x optic at a target 400yrds away will it look the same size as a target 40 yards away?

Or is there much more to it than I'm thinking?

Just trying to decide what magnification level I want to go with.

Example:

A 10x scope
will make the object 10 times big than what your human I see.

YMMV.
There may be an optical illusion effect that varies from person to person due to looking through a tube/lenses and how it finally focuses to the back of the eye.
For instance to me objects appear smaller though in focus when I look through my glasses which have no magnification.  (Near sighted.)
You're going to have to look for yourself to decide what will be best for you.
It may seem otherwise to the individual due to a multitude of reasons.
Clarity of Glass-effects focus I had a 3-9 scope that had to be at seven for me to see a doorknob on shed at 100 yards as good as I could see it on 4 with a 1-4 Millet DMS.
I've also noted the exceptional clarity of a single power 3.5x ACOG.  A fixed sight will have less lenses so will transfer more light to the eye everything being equal.
The amount of clarity makes up for what it lacks in magnification or objective lense size but I haven't had a chance to compare them shooting into shadows in the evening.
Under darker conditions you will see more with a bigger objective lens all else being equal.

Anything above 10x will be hard to focus on target if you are shooting offhand.  Just try holding a set of 7x35/10x50/12x40 binoculars of the same price range.  The 12s take just too much effort to hold still so the target doesn't seem to move in the lense.  same with the 7x35, but the 10x50 can be held steady enough at mid breath pause and yet you can see more at night into the shadows as well because of the larger objective lenses  The larger Objective lense and field of view means whatever you are looking at is easier to hold steady in the lense as well.  a 10x35 will seem to suffer more due to shake than a 10x50.

If you are doing any shooting at predators or other live animals you'll want something with low magnification with a wide field of view for speed in picking up target at close range.
You could always go to someplace that is open later and convince them to let you compare different scopes outside as it gets darker.

Everything will be a trade off in relation to price-speed-percision-visibility/usability.

Long range get the 4-16x50.
If you are calling in coyotes close you may be happier with the 1-4.
I've been looking at XLT 1.5-6x42  with 4a illuminated.  Finer dot than the dot in donut so it shouldn't be a problem with my slight astigmatism.  I wish it had bullet drop lines for 4 5 6 hundred below and an extra tiny non illuminated dot above for 100-200 yard.
On Millet DMS the donut looks like an eye if I have it set too bright in evening.
It also seems busy to me.  I can hit a 300 meter silouhette easily.  Just seems too busy for coyote at 300 meters.

what i am looking for is to be used for pig hunting. dawn and dusk shots probably at a max of 200yards i would say

Any 3x9x40-44 will do all that you want and need. Check out the Bushnell doa. I have two for my deer rifles. Ymmv

You also may be interested in the Bushnell Trophy XLT 1.5-6x42.  (260 dollars at local gun store)  I've only had a chance to look through it in daylight but was impressed.
There is also a 1.5-6x44 with 4a non illuminated 4a reticle that is below 150 buckis in some places.  4a is a European fav. with a (T) open above so you don't have the verticle line obstructing top part of the scope.  Finer lines towards center like duplex reticle.  If ther is alot of shadows and you can hunt longer after sundown I'd go with illuminated version.

If you hate electronics there is also the Elite 3-9x50 firefly from Bushnell as well as the Elite 3-9 and 4-12 Firefly if I recall correctly.  .  You can shine a flashlight in the scope and the crosshairs will glow for quite awhile.

Trijicon Accupoints have gotten good low light reviews by the Texas pig hunters.

You are correct.
At 3X power the target will look 3X closer.
With 10X power magnification, a target at 400 yards will look the same size as a target at 40 yards viewed without magnification.
There's nothing more.
