Ok, here's a stupid question regarding the Surefire M73 rails. What's the extra piece of rail that sticks out for? I've seen that some people remove this piece. Is it cosmetic or does it actually serve a function?

I'm assuming you are referring to the extended bottom rail?
It doesn't have a specific purpose. Just a bit of extra room for all those cool SF weapons lights.

It is to support your front sight bearings.

I hear some people like to mount the bi-pod there. I have no use for it at this time.
