This is probably stupid but is it possible to shoot an AR15 without a magazine?

Let's say you were in a firefight and all your magazines were destroyed or lost....could you load single rounds and operate without the mag?

Hope I don't get crapped on for this.

Thanks
Paul

Yep - you don't even need a gas system for it to go bang in the right direction.

It's just much slower.

AR, yes.  Some pistols however, those can be a problem.

Coming back from Edson range one year a not so bright BAM went to clean her rifle and after pulling the charging handle a round came flying out.
Luckily she didn't prove this scenario to be true, but if she had finger fucked the trigger there would have been chaos on that bus.

Yeah, magazine disconnects are retarded

Is a round placed in through the ejection port going to be grabbed properly by the ejectors?

I know on some .22LR rifles the lip is "grabbed" by the bolt, and on some pistols the ejector sliding past the rim to get clipped on can damage or break the ejector.

I just bought my first AR and was wondering the same thing.

This is my first rifle other than a marlin 22.

I'm used to pistols and most of them can't operate without a magazine. It's probably a stupid question for you guys but not for me.

Thanks for the answers and understanding.

Everybody here was new to ARs at one time too. Don't sweat it, you will catch on and be helping the new folks out yourself in no time.

If you do decide to fire by feeding rounds without a magazine, just be sure the gun is pointed down range before you let the bolt fly home just in case of a slam fire.

I'll see your LEOs and raise you an unknown but undoubtedly huge number of non-LEOs.  Magazine disconnects have saved many un-trained lives.

But to the point, YES you can just drop  cartridge into the chamber and close the bolt.  If slamfires are a worry then ease the bolt home and use the forward assist to snap the extractor over the cartridge rim.  Do not practice this at home...

How many standard issue firearms have a magazine disconnect? If that was their intended use, why don't all Leo have a firearm with it?

Just because you can doesn't mean you should!  JUST RUN!!! You'll probably be better off.
Sorry, just being a smart a$$

Pop one round in the chamber and run. When the zombies catch you and you know you can't reload fast enough, you'll have a round for yourself
