What is a barrel extension? And is this part chrome lined? Or am I mixing this up with the chamber? And is the chamber part of the barrel or the upper receiver? I need help.

Its the tail end of the barrel - the section the bolt locks into. It is screwed onto the end of the barrel. It is NOT part of the chamber, and as far as I know it is NOT chrome lined. Why are you concerend about this? Usually it's only a part that a barrel manufacturer would deal with. |

| The barrel itself has the chamber bored into it at the breech end. The barrel extension, as noted above, is a part that's screwed onto the breech end of the barrel. The extension is what the bolt locks into. The barrel extension (along with the bolt being within specs) is what sets the headspace of the barrel. |
Correct
Correct again. Because the AR-15 uses a barrel extension (instead of the bolt locking into the receiver) it can use 'weaker receiver materials (as the bolt extension takes the stress of firing) and you don't need to headspace the barrel to the receiver. All headspacing is a function of the barrel extension. |
