| I may be buying a supressor for my M-16 auto if I get one. If I do I will need some subsonic ammo. Subsonic ammo I saw went @ 20 for 17.99. I think this is crazy for something like this. I reload. Is there any resource for reloading subsonic .223? I know one way is to experiment because there is no danger of a KB but only a squib so you should check for squibs often until you are confident in the load correct? Also if you do this you should find a load that will cycle to bolt and not be a squib even if it requires a weaker buffer spring correct? I dont experiment like this nor do I have a chronograph. Is there a rock solid source I can use to load subsonic loads? |

Generally speaking, subsonic rifle ammo will not cycle the action of your weapon. I don't have reloading information, but if you want to try some factory subsonic ammo for a lower price I have TTI Armory subsonic 223 ammo for $12.95 per box of 20. It's match grade ammo with a moly coated 55gr FMJ bullet, and blackened brass cases. Mike Brewerton 801-913-7887 |

No subsonic load will cycle an AR, and any subsonic load using standard AR bullets will have LESS wounding potential than a .22LR. Which is why everyone will recommend a .22LR conversion kit and standard-velocity ammo if you must have a subsonic load. They'll even cycle the gun and the ammo is cheap. -Troy |

Like you, I was in my search for subsonic load data as well as .223 rounds that were subsonic and would cycle the action. First, the load data. I would recommend staying away from the trial and error. I found published load data for the subsonic .223 round. It is published in the Accurate Smokeless Powders Loading Guide, Number Two, page 187. It contains load data for three rounds, IMI 55gr, HDY 60 SP, and HDY 75 HPBT. It uses the Solo 1250 powder. In the book it lists S1250. However, on page vi under legend, it shows the S1250 is the Solo 1250. I will not provide the actual load data as this is in the book. As for subsonic loads that will cycle the action of an M16... Extreme Shock sells this ammo. You can find it at www.extremeshockusa.com. They have their NyTrilium Subsonic rounds which are 127 gr bullets. The reason they call it "shock" is due to the price. It sells for $74.20 for a box of 20 rounds. I will tell you, it works! I bought one box of this and out of my M16 with an 11.5" barrel, and the AWC Raider Suppressor, the velocity is 975fps. The action cycles as well. However, the noise of the action is very loud and hides the fact that you are firing subsonic. The other bad part of this is at 25 yards the path of the bullet is great, at 50 yds the bullet tumbles. My guess is the heavy weight and low velocity. Hope this all helps. |
