Getting close to finishing my build. What free float is the most popular right now and why?
I don't need a handful of pic rail. I am leaning on toward a clean a mid length over a carbine low pro gas block on a 16 inch tube. Suggestions with pics would be helpful. |
| I dont have a whole lot of experience with different rails, but I like the Troy Alpha. I used a 9" on a pistol build and liked it enough to use an 11" on a midlength I put together. They are reasonably priced, lightweight, and lock up tight using a standard barrel nut. They also fit my smaller hands well. |
I also have a Troy TRX Alpha rail and I'm really happy with it.
-Not terribly expensive (for a rail) -Extremely light weight -Comes with enough rail sections to mount whatever you want -Small circumference makes holding onto it comfortable without the use of hand stops, vert grips, etc -Mounts with a standard barrel nut and easy to install |

Midwest Industries Gen 2 free float rails are good. Just put one on my BCM mid upper. It's a 2 piece so you don't have to remove your front site post or barrel to install.

| I would definitely say the new Troy Alpha series, or the MI Gen II SS. Both are very inexpensive, with the MI being slightly cheaper. Many modular free float rails are 2" diameter, however the troy is about 1.75" and the MI is actually 1.5". It seems many have gravitated towards the smaller diameter modular free floats. The great thing about these two rails is they are both very light, with the MI being slightly lighter. There are two versions of the Troy, the TRX and the VTAC. They are the same thing except the TRX has circular venting and the VTAC has slotted venting. I personally have the VTAC and find it to be an excellent rail with a super easy install and solid clamping system. It also uses the standard barrel nut so not having to remove the barrel nut meant I did not have to spend a bunch of money on wrenches and vice blocks. Some use a proprietary barrel nut. |

I just got the Troy VTAC rail for my current build and really like it. Pic below of the current state, still waiting on a few parts to finish.

I have the Rainier Arms version of that Samson rail on my midlength build and it's outstanding. It uses the standard barrel nut as well and comes with two rail sections and a qd swivel attachment.
