I have a dpms lr308 T, it has a 16" hbar with 1/10 twist.
I am looking at putting an Eotech 512 or 517 on it, other suggestions welcome. Hope to do a helicopter hog hunt next year in Texas with it. What weight rounds should I start with looking towards accuracy and best penetration etc Thanks 41 |

You are in luck, in the fact that with your rig you can have it your way....
Just about any of the major manufacturer's offerings called hunting rounds will do the trick. I would start with something around 150 grains and select the bullet your hosts or guides recommend based on their outings. If they don't have a favorite, I would suggest your shopping starts on a site like this... http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rifle.aspx http://www.hornady.com/store/searchammo.php?mode=search&main_cat=250&categoryid%5B%5D=259&categoryid%5B%5D=394&categoryid%5B%5D=&x=41&y=10 Narrow the selection to ,308 and hunting, then take a look at the 150 gr range. More or less, your rig should do fine with any of them, but I would grab samples and test for function and accuracy before you run from a moving platform. Fast shooting is demanding, and when you add the moving platform it would be best if your rig functions flawlessly. Your guide will give you some pointers if it is your first time shooting from the helo while it moves. The shots tend to quarter down and your placement will get better with experience. With .308, you will have enough penetration for any pig with just about anything short of a varmint round. If anything, you may over penetrate in a level shot and find your bullet goes into the animal behind the one shot with some of the hunting bullets designed for penetration. The all copper rounds and partitioned bullets would fit this description. Soft points and hollow points will tend to do a little better, but even those can pass through randomly. Merry Christmas. |
| Any hunting round your rifle shoots reliably and accurately will work fine. Every helo hunt I'm running or have been a part of will require brass catchers on your rifle. The majority of helo outfitters will require you to use their own weapons. The only thing you may be needing to provide is ammo and eye pro. Unless you just want to use the 308, 5.56 works just fine on hogs and will allow for better controlled shooting on follow-up shots. |

I have never helo hunted but have shot three different DPMS barrels in 308. 24 inch SS, 16inch AP4 and a 20 inch. All of them liked the 165grn and bigger bullets for accuracy. The 24 inch liked the 180grn the best. They all however did shoot adequately with 110 vmax and 147 millsurp.
I would love to go on a hog hunt but they don't live wild here. Have fun, AL |
