Okey guys i am finally in the market for my first "real" light purchase and im really getting pummeled with all the options.
Up until this point all i've had is a maglite 3C and just saw the surefire 6P led defender and it seems like a solid option(but how should i know) here.  The thing thats driving me crazy it's all the options. i've been on candlepower forums and thats worse than the GD board here. Bear in mind that i might mount the light on my AR in the future.

Now is this a good starter light or should i keep looking?

Thanks

I wouldn't carry a crenellated bezel in my pocket. The standard 6P is a nice light to start with because there are so many drop in options for it.

I carry a Solarforce L2 with a ThruNite XP-G drop in, it is a 6P clone of sorts, but cheaper, so you'll get to see if you like the size and weight for EDC. Solarforce also sells a decent pocket clip for about $5 that will fit their lights as well as other Surefire 6P type lights.

CPF is a good site, but you have to understand the lingo and filter though the searches.

I have an Elzetta M60 light on my HD carbine.  It flat out works, but I'm glad I got it as a gift, as it is pricey.

The 6P LED is ok, but I would replace the drop-in with one from Malkoff, if you can find a place that has them in stock.

The ThruNIte XP-G drop-in is bright, but you will be hard pressed to get more than 250 Lumens +/- out of a standard 6P body and it sucks the life out of 123's.

If you wanted to get your feet wet w/o blowing your budget, try a L2 Solarforce w/ their 3.6-12V R2 Single mode drop-in (good for about 200+ Lumens w/ two 123's) from Lighthound.com.  Add in the replacement bezel ring and you are out the door for under $36.00; $40.00 or so w/ the pocket clip.

I used to be skeptical of Solarforce, but after reading Andrew's blog, I bought a couple.  I'm glad I did because they are a good value for the money and I've given out numerous L2r's (body takes 2 AA's) to my friends who are not into flashlights, as you can find AA's anywhere in the developed world.

Only thing I do not like about the L2 is that the standard tail is a reverse clicky, not a forward clicky.  They are threaded to take Surefire tails, so you can swap them out, if you so choose.

My EDC light is a Surefire E1B. Best light I've ever owned. It has dual output that comes in real handy. You click it once for 80 lumen. Click it twice more and you get 5 lumen.

Carry the E1B as well, love it.

You don't want to mount an EDC light on a rifle, those are two completely different roles.  You really need to call Kevin at brightflashlights.com  He'll walk you through the selection and get you the best price, he's a board sponsor.

The Surefire 6P is a good light.  I would suggest getting the modded light here Surefire 6P/G2.  The Surefire G2 is a good one to.  It is a little bit cheaper than the 6P.  They are both very bright and very reliable.  The 6P/G2 is fairly large, in my opinion, for everyday carry unless it is in a holster.  My everyday carry is a 4sevens Quark 123-2.  It will drop in my pocket and is very bright for its size.  For a weapon mounted light I picked up a Surefire M951 off of the equipment exchange.  They are a bunch on there all the time.  I put a LED in it and couldn't be happier.  There are enough light and combination's out there to make your head spin, but the above mentioned lights work well for me.

What he said is excellent advise.

What is the correct high output for the E1B? On Surefire's main page for the E1B Surefire E1B (and most of the other stuff I've read) claims 80 lumens but on their "Test Spin" flash on detail #6 about the tailcap, they state 110 lumens?

I'm guessing that 80 is correct and 110 was a typo but I'm wondering if maybe this one of their underrated lights (like the X300 was) and actually puts out more like 110?

Surefire is one of the few companies that does not over state their output.  The E1B will output AT LEAST 80 Lumens.

I carry a Surefire VTAC L4 at the moment. When the LX1 LEDs come out I'll probably switch to that.

I personally carry a Surefire E2D LED Defender.  Have for about 4 months so far.  It is bright as hell on the first click, 250 lumens, and steps down to I believe 80 on the second click.  I carry it clipped into my offhand pocket and the crenelations have not caused me any issues thus far.  I love this light.  I have a couple of 6P's and I just find them too bulky for EDC.  The E2D is not cheap, but it is worth it in my opinion.
