Hello all!!  I'm thinking of buying the Surefire M500AB weaponlight for my Bushy as a home defense weapon.  Anyone have any experience with these???  How robust are they?   Do they stay inline with the receiver, is there any movement at all after the unit is mounted?  Any and all info would be greatly appreciated....

The light is actually an excellent light and it is very very bright. Some might think the AB model (3 cell with turbo head) is too bright for indoors. The turbo head is extremely useful outdoors, but may be a bit much in an enclosure. Unless you live in a stadium

Other than that the M500 series is limiting. It is a dedicated handgaurd unit. This means adding anything else to the guns forend is pretty much out of the question. If there is nothing else you want to add, this is not a problem, but it will limit your options almost competely if you do.

The dedicated system also uses standard handgaurds which restrict heat dissipation and good airflow. Again, this may or may not be a problem for you depending on your use and need for the gun.

Those are a couple disadvantages to the system, its advantages are that other than the very expensive M900, it is the only other system that incorporates the LED Nav lights which are very useful. All the wires and switches are internal and very easy to access. It isnt very bulky when compared to an external light of the same power, and it can be upgraded to the M500B which is the absolute brightest weapons light Surefire makes (up to 500 lumens).

I have the M500A w/ red LED...I did not realize the power of 225 lumens...I was doing the "John Wayne quick-draw thing" in the mirror and temporarily blinded myself...won't do that again.

I just picked up a M511A and am very pleased with it.  I shot a night match with it and it is VERY bright with the uber bulb in it.  Mine does not have the LED's in it but that is okay with me.  It fits just like a regular handgard nice and tight.  It does not have any play.  It can be mounted "upside down" to minimize the smoke washing out your site picture.  I was thinking about the M5xxB but I thought the recoil might be a little much.

Ive been having my M500AB on my stubby bushy and I have been verry impressed with it thus far. The only downer is that i cant seem to find a place to mount my new laser.. But otherwise, its a great light and i would reccomend it to anyone who is considering to buy one

Indoors, the Turbohead does not disperse the beam enough, unless you use the Ken Good "search with a handheld, shoot with the weaponlight" technique.

Outdoors, it rocks beyond 25 yds.  For a GP home defense rifle, I'd stick with the A version.

Also, have any of you heard of problems with the M500's melting or getting hot during extended fire drills, 5 dumps, etc...??   It doesn't seem like there's very much ventilation.
