Finally have some money saved up to get a railed forend. I'm 90% sure I'm going with the Surefire M73. All I plan on putting on it at a later date is a light and a vertical grip. Is this forend ok, good, or excellent? Should I be looking at something else?

If you can find a non-free float rail system that locks up tighter, uses less hardware, and costs less or the same, please let me know.

The M73 is an excellent piece of engineering.  And the special bonus is the price.  Buy with confidence!

Notable features;

1.  Requires no disassembly of the barrel or delta ring group.

2.  Extends like a horizontal extension ladder, with the top half compresssing on the front sight base and the bottom half compressing on the barrel nut.  All from the work of only two beefy set screws.

3.  Also has interlocking tabs along it's entire length to ensure stability of the entire rail system.

4.  Maintains a small diameter, very similar to standard handguards.

(Some complain because it isn't level with the top receiver rail, but the advantage of that is a slim design)

5.  Allows use of KAC rail panels on all four sides

6.   Surefire guarantee

I had them on two of my carbines,,, well made, easy to install.  My only gripe about them was that the top rail was not the same height as the a3 reciever.  Many people this does not bother, as they only mount one optic on their ar.  For me, mounting a pvs14 and an eotech 552 I needed the rail to be the same height on the top, thus I went to a ff midwest industries.  Bought it from Bravo USA, and their price on the midwest was the same ballpark as the surefire.... so now I have MI FF handguards on both my carbines, and am much happier.

the M73 has a steped down rail on top and actually all 4 are a little smaller in diameter than most other rails.  I prefer the that way one because if you use a hard rail cover it makes the handguard a perfect fit in my hans were as the others with covers seem to be a little to large.  Two being that if I wanted to and an OTAL I want it to sit a little lower and the M73 allows that.  If all of that bothers you than I would recommend the MI#17, it is a little similar to the KAC rails but at around $130.00.  MI is a great company who makes an excellent rail.  If I couldn't have the M73 the MI 17 is the way I would go.

Good luck and let us know what you decide
