For those of you who have them or have played with them, is it possible to alter where the light is mounted?  I would prefer to mount it underneath the handguard if possible.  worst case scenario, can I at least move it to the left side of the forearm since I shoot lefty?

also, it looks like the light will add a lot of side bulk which could keep a hard case from being fully closed and latched up with this set up; any comments on this????

Thanks guys and gals

The light housing is molded into the top handguard so it cant be moved. You can install it upside down which would put the light on the lower left and would put the squeeze pad on the lower right. Saw a leftie do that.

The 500's do add some bulk but still should fit most AR cases. I use a discrete case with mine and it works fine.

The 500s can be installed upside down, which will put the lamp module on the lower left (7-8 o'clock position). Your touch pad will then be on the right side where a lefty can depress it with his fingertips. For a lefty, if you are going to a tactical sling, you will have to experiment with which way you install the light and the sling to make sure that the sling doesn't cross in front of the light or hang up on the light.

The surefire literature I have says this is sometimes done because gunsmoke hangs in front of the light in its normal position.

No problems what so ever putting them in cases in my experience, including the cheap hard side cases to expensive Pelican cases to soft side cases.

Okay, thanks guys, here's couple for you, since I'll be putting it on a BM Dissipator, with the milled gas block under the handguard, is there anything that extends into that area that could interfere with the forend going on correctly either way?

And finally, is the extra $130+ cost and the God-only-knows-how-long wait worth it for this system over the standard barrel-mount Classic 660-type setup?

Thanks again.

I am FAIRLY certain that the system will fit over the gasblock on your Dissipator upper. Not 100%, but fairly sure.

Yeah, the extra money is worth it. Here's why I think so. The M500 series have no external wires to worry about. It also does not mount to the barrel which is a big plus. Mounting things to your barrel will change POA/POI when it is mounted compared to when it is not. The new versions offer the LED's that are not only really cool, but genuinely useful. The M500 series also has constant on off, pressure pad, and permanent disable controls. Sounds like a lot, but they are laid out very intelligently and in user friendly areas.

What purpose do the LED's serve, and are the controls still well laid out if the whole thing is flipped upside down so that the light is hanging from the lower left?

Thanks again, great info, as always

The LED's are so you can move around without using the full power of the xeon bulb. They are primarily for navigation. I dont know if it would be as user friendly turned upside down? I sorta doubt it though. [V]

I agree completely with NewARGuy. The 500A is a super unit. No wires to hang up on brush or other obstructions, positive lockout AND touch pad both standard.

If you mount it upside down, with main light at 7-8 o'clock, the LED nav lights will be at 4-5 o'clock, with the on-off switches for the main light and the touch pad for the nav lights directly behind them. You would then use the thumb of your right hand to activate the nav lights, and the fingertips to activate the main lamp.

I am a lefty too, but when I looked at the upside down installation, it wouldn't work with my Giles Sling. The sling (modified to work with the 500A) crossed in front of the nav lights and blocked them, so I installed mine with the main lamp at 1-2 o'clock (right handed) so that the sling would work better. I just use my right thumb to activate the touch pad for the main lamp, and my right fingertips to activate the nav lights and the on-off buttons.

Sableco has the 500A in stock, or did a couple of weeks ago. At that time they only had them with white nav lights. Said the blue/red were 4-6 weeks out. If you call Sableco, ask Robert about the gas block question. If he doesn't know I expect he will find out for you.......
