Is there some benefit to going with a m961 over the m500a(b).  The cost looks about the same after I have to buy new handguards with a rail for the M961.  Is there a weight savings or something else I'm missing like lumens strength or run time?

The M500A uses the same lamps and bezel and the M96
The M500AB uses the same lamps and bezels as the M97

I guess that you have more switch options with the M96/M97 lights and placement options too. Also, you can fit a vertical foregrip, and/or other lights/lasers etc to the rails
Also, you can remove the light from the rails. You may need different storage systems for the M500 Series
