If I swap out my A2 upper for a flat top, can I use the same bolt carrier?  I've read that I should.  But, is it really that critical?  I'm keeping the same barrel.

In OSUT, the ejector on my A4 was lodged outward, right as I was trying to qualify, by some brass shavings.  The DS told me to swap bolts with someone that has already qualified.  I furrowed my brows and looked perplexed because I've always heard you're not supposed to.  He then exclaimed, "I know what you're thinking, Private.  Just f*ing do it!"

So, how big of a deal is it?

TY.  I found a couple of threads after playing with my wording while using the search function and waiting over and over for my time limit to expire.

If you're using the same barrel, then should should keep the same bolt.  The upper itself plays no part in the headspace equation.

Even if you were changing barrels, the odds are strongly in your favor if you use the older bolt assy.  I once took 5 well used Colt milsurp bolts I'd acquired and checked headspace in four different fairly new AR assys I had.  Four of the bolts wouldn't close on a max guage, and the fifth, which was so old it still had the white insert under the extractor spring, wouldn't close on a field guage
