OK, I'll try to keep this simple.

I've got two rifles.  Each has 400 rounds or less through them so far as I have another AR-15 that gets used for most of the shooting.
One has a standard phosphate bolt group, and the other has a fully chromed bolt group.  The last time I took the first rifle out of the safe, I realized that if it had a chrome plated bolt group that was an easier cleanup than phosphate, I might actually shoot it...

Am I headed for any trouble if I swab the bolt groups between those two rifles?

I say no problem if both guns are in spec. but some one will b by shortly to say no way.

It was done all the time when I was in the Army, mass rifle cleaning parties, parts where swapped between rifles inadvertently all the time.

If you had two rifles and swapped one bolt group back and forth then you'd wear stuff out sooner.

But a one time swap, especially as new as the parts are, will not hurt a thing.

If you want your rifle to be accurate and constant! Keep the bolt you started shooting with that rifle and only use that bolt with that barrel! As for Bolt Carriers yes you should be able to switch those.

Your bolt wears to the barrel locking lugs. Don't switch them out unless it is a new one on a used barrel. You never swap bolts with a barrel unless the bolt is new and barrel is old. Never the other way around,.... just like adding water into acid. try reversing it and see how much skin you will loose. Same goes for a bolt and barrel.

Guys in the military talk about tossing all the bolts into cleaning fluid and just putting them back in the rifles randomly. I have never figured out if this stuff is legit or not.

I'd say with that low round count you'd be OK for a one time swap.  But I wouldn't make a habit of it, or swap high round count bolts.

It probably isn't going to hurt once or twice but a bolt wears to the chamber lugs.
I can see using the same carrier but matching a bolt to a sigle rifle.
I personally wouldn't make a habit of switching bolts around.
The military isn't real concerned with a rifle wearing out. The just replace it.

And I doubt any serious operators, including Marines, are switching bolts around.

We never did that. It simply was not permitted.

Wait, you are cleaning your bolt after only 400 rounds? Hit it with a splash of Mobile 1 synthetic 10w-30 and run another 600 through it before worrying about cleaning the guts. Don't baby it or you will never know what it will do.

OK, basically what I was thinking.
I'm NOT planning to make a habit of it.  I've always kept bolt groups matched to rifles, it's just that I opened the safe the other day and realized that I wished I'd put the chrome bolt in the OTHER build, and realized that if I had, I'd probably take it out and shoot it more.

Actually I'm in the habit of cleaning the rifles when I'm 'done' shooting them.  This has been as little as 60 rounds immediately after getting home from a quick trip to the range.  I've also spent an (expensive...) weekend with some buddies once and put almost 2000 rounds through a rifle without any cleaning...We were too busy shooting...Hehe...

ETA: I did stop and dash a little bit more lubricant on.  I've heard that motor oil is good stuff, but I've actually got some LSA that I usually use.

I admit, I have a hard time putting a dirty rifle away regardless the round count, which is usually under a hundred. But neither of my bolts are chrome and with full synthetic on them they do not accumulate crap nearly as bad. This allows you to go farther between cleanings (if need be) and they will clean up much easier. I hit 800 rounds once prior to obama when wolf was $2.79 a box on sale, and it want bad at all.

I have a Bushmaster M4 with about 6k through it.  I bought a BCM BCG as a spare and I decided to make it my primary.  I emailed BCM and asked about using it and they said it was good to go.
