If I can help others to learn this wonderful new thing....I have done something positive. If I can help the US military find a better cartridge to kill the P'sOS, like those who knocked down the World Trade Center buildings, I have done something positive. This has nothing to do whatsoever with monetary gain or a bias toward anything, any company or entity. I am the first to tell people to take what I say like everything else they read on the internet....with a grain of salt...... Again I commend HTR for being upfront with his involvement. "If I can help others to learn this wonderful new thing" is indicative of real personal involvement that goes deeper than mere financial gain. Such emotional and personal commitments are far deeper and important to folks than the financial. It is also anything but neutral... Excuse me,....who are you? What do you have, of a technical nature, to add to this discussion? Why should I be "neutral." ...and versus WHAT exactly??? I didn't write this thread as a comparison against anything else. If you took it that way, you must have some reason not to like the 6.8 SPC. If so, then tell us, in a technical manner, what that is. Otherwise, your posts seem to be IN NO WAY TECHNICAL IN NATURE. There are guys here that want to learn. Please contribute in a way that educates or get out of their way. If you disagree with what it is I say, then provide contravening facts, and I will stand corrected when I know that the right message goes out to those people I am trying to educate.
I LIKE the 6.8 X 43 MM SPC. That is something I wish to share with others on this forum. Why should it matter that I happen to DONATE my ranch for testing? I also donate my ranch for the "hunts for heroes." I donate my ranch for grad students from Texas A & M to come and study the unique ecology of the San Antonio River bottom forest. Does that make me biased, as well? If it pleases you, I also like these very much: -6.5 Grendel -6MM Remington -6MM Banshee -.308 Winchester -.44 magnum -.22LR Please do all of us a favor and either contribute in a technical manner, or GTFO of the thread. I am rooting for anyone, that is also off their ass doing the tireless work of the folks I mentioned above, even if that work is with another cartridge, as long as it improves choices for AR-15 shooters.. |

HTR, good write-up as usual from you. I like how you listed the barrel makers into two groups, to boil-down where they stand compared to each other. Thanks for the effort.

Thank you, HTR, for an excellently written commentary on the State of the Art of the modern 6.8 x 43. You guys, and the progress that you have demonstrated over the past couple of years, are the reason I bought my XT. As they say, it is truly not our fathers' 6.8 :)
I believe that the insistence by some to label it a wildcat is more an exercise in semantics than anything else. I guess I don't put too much credence in SAAMI in this case :) The evolution in performance has been amazing no matter what one calls it. One thing for sure, it quickly has become my favorite rifle for reaching out the truck window and touching anything that I want to touch whether it is 30 yards away, or 300 yards away. The fact that it is in an AR platform is a real bonus. I urge all that have not tried one to judge it on today's demonstrated performance instead of claims based on the original cartridge's performance in rapidly growing obsolete chambers and barrel twists. For those that have the original chamber, get on the reamer list and step up to better performance. Thanks again, HTR, for all you have done in this evolution and the many other causes you support. |

I think we have forgoton about PRI in all this as they were instrumental IIRC in making some of the first 6.8 for the .mil contracts. I stopped in at PRI this last winter and talked to the shop manager and breifly mentioned something to him about the updates to the chamber and this forum, he basically told me they won't change anything b/c they are using the specs the .mil requested.
Though we have come along way...we still have a few more battles to win before the war is won. PRI and LMT may be two of the few manufactures that have 6.8 contracts and we need to show them the light. Remember one of the main goals here is to get the best round for our soldiers, even if the only soldiers that are using the 6.8 currently are SOF we should help them. |
|
Well, fuck me three times....
I want to be the first kid on the block with a 6.8. So I go on ARFCOM to find out what/who/where to buy. By the time my upper is built, I hear about excessive pressures from incorrect twist rate and # of grooves in the barrel. OK, no problem. Order another 'correct' barrel and rebuild the upper assembly. Oh, fuck me, what? The shitload of SSA ammo is too hot and should not be used? Wonderful. NOW I come to find my 'correct' barrel is also junk due to the leade, or lack thereof. Since 6:37 CDT this morning, I have been kicked by a fucking cow, find out I left my prescription pain killers from my wasted ACL in Houston, had a fat chick back into my truck, and now am told my 6.8 build is STILL an unsafe POS. If I PM someone my address, would you be so kind to stop by and shoot me in the head with a .38 RNL? thank you |

Well, Fook....I can sympathize with you on the cow as I had one try to get me and my new McNab pup on Tuesday. Fortunately, I was prepared and had picked up a big stick to bounce off her head when she was about 10 ft away. The pup was also prepared as she got behind me. There has been plenty of discussion on barrels, pressures, and velocities for the past year on this board in the stickies, but, all is not lost as stated several times within this thread. Use the reamer and go ahead and shoot the SSA ammo safely in most barrels. Come over to the 6.8 forums and sign up for the reamer. Sure hope the leg gets better fast! |
|
i began building my ar with full intent of going 6.8. i'm really glad i didn't jump in when they came out, i would be really pissed if i paid all that money for a rec7 and come to find out the barrel is the wrong chamber and twist rate(i believe it's 1/10, don't kill me if i'm wrong). you can ream it to fix the chamber, but not the twist. next year i plan to get an upper from ar15performance. i've read lots of good things about them, and constructor on 68forums.com answered a couple of questions for me in less than 24 hrs. pretty impressive to me considering their workload.
edit: i don't know if it's been mentioned, but i think constructor got an 85 gr barnes tsx up to 3200 fps with one of his new barrels. |

That's not to take away from all the work that has been done, and the huge performance increases. I'm actually kind of in awe at what you guys have done with this. The caliber is mass produced by firearms manufacturers and ammunition manufacturers all over the world, thereby rendering your definition "wildcat" null and void /wildcat argument. |

Remember guys, if you have an out of spec barrel it can be reamed...cost of ammo usually runs much higher than a given barrel over it's ilfe. Just buy a new barrel |

Fook
remeber even a 1:10 barrel you can get good to excellent accuracy out of. You might not be able to push it as fast but the dog will still hunt. If the chamber is the SAAMII 1 then get on the reamer list and change it to SPC 2 it is a easy 5 min fix and can be done by anybody. Sorry about the cows. The kicking one and the rearending one. |

Note the red part, I'm saying that it's getting close. There is still a disconnect between the mass produced SAAMI chambers and what ammo that is available to shoot in it without pressure problems. This things seems to be just about ready to land and become stable, but it's still flapping a bit wildly. |

I jumped on the 6.8 bandwagon years ago with the purchase of a C*** upper. Naturally, since I was ahead of my time and in the rush to be the first kid with the new cool toy, I was stuck with the wrong twist/chamber.
Sold it and bought a Ko-tonics - Right twist/chamber. Bought another one - shorter and lighter. Sold the first KT and upgraded to a ARPerformance MK Sam-R. I'm finally where I want to be...what's that? There's new stuff coming out? D***!! Where'd I put that credit card? |

OR... you can get on their "reamer list" and a member will ship you the reamer and you can ream your own SAAMI chamber to SPCII. Supposedly, the reaming job is idiot-proof, needs no tools other than your hand, the barrel (still in the upper is OK), the reamer and some oil.... takes 5 minutes. I should be getting a reamer in anyday now... for my two barrels. I'm pretty sure one of mine is SAAMI and the other I'm not sure about. -ZA THANKS!!! |

The "state of the 6.8" as it is today is what swayed my personal decision to choose it as my first AR build. You old armchair critics can bicker all day about the history of the cartridge, but you are missing the point of this post entirely–– we're talking NOW––not THEN. You want objective 3rd party: you're looking at it. You know what I am? An intelligent, literate man with the capability to evaluate information. So are you––so stay with me here: Early-adopters were intelligent too. But there's a fundamental difference––they did what all early-adopters do: they made a bet based on knowledge without experience.
And we learned. You people bellowing 'wildcat' as though it is a derisive term is confusing to me, as a consumer, because as an objective 3rd party, what I found a few months ago–– you know, currently, when I was heavily researching what I wanted to buy when building this rifle, was that:
AND
So, I, as an intelligent and literate man, can make my decision based off the previous mistakes/lessons/education of those that came before me. You guys that are hung up on old, first-generation standards, despite knowing that everyone can show that they're clearly obsolete and have been corrected, are analogous to people refusing to travel in a jet powered plane because only propellers are "certified" or "original, known spec". Please. The 6.8 x 43 is a spectacular round. It is here. Now. The baby fat is gone. The limits have been explored and discovered with untold tens/hundreds-of-thousands-worth of rounds in experimentation. By BOTH financially-invested gun makers, AND intelligent enthusiasts alike. It is far better than it used to be––because the errors discovered after its creation have been EXPERIENCED AND CORRECTED. Get it? I am not an early-adopter personality––believe me. To you guys that have been shooting for decades, this "new" round might seem too green to be legitimate. Well let me ask you this: the Ferarri F430 has only been around for the last few years–– does that mean it's "too fresh" to trust on the track? Get serious. The guys behind the extended development of this caliber are to the practical ballistics field what Ferarri's engineers are to the automobile world: among the elite; some of the best in the world. Go to 6.8forums.com and read for yourself. Then make some real arguments on some actual technical grounds. I bet you can't. I've been convinced that TODAY, the 6.8 is absolutely a superior alternative to the 5.56 for its purpose. I want my military using it. I want my police to use it. I am using it. Give this round, and the absolutely magnificent work of the men that created/used/experienced/corrected, and optimized it their due––the AR-15/M16/M4 world has been upgraded significantly because of their work. Otherwise, get that POS Cessna out of my way–– my F-15 is about to leave your ass stalled in its jetwash ;) |

A forward from Constructor;
Large primer brass can show false signs of high pressure, there is enough area in the large primer for the high pressure gases to push the primer out of the pocket then get slammed into the bolt face flattening the primer. Primers that are flattened but not cratered are usually a product of this action. I would suggest using small primer brass because of this even though most reloading guides data is with large primers. H |

Not much. You'll find very few people shooting this cartridge at that distance. I have shot it at 500 yards, and was able to hit silhouettes pretty easily. Once we get the new GS bullets loaded, we will then be able to extend the range quite a bit, since they have very high BC's. |

FYI:
DPMS is going to the SPC II and 1:11 twist. They are moving away from the old SAAMI chamber. They already were using the 1:11 twist. Confirmed by two members from 68forums (Ron169, and Pantherdude) in separate correspondence, both are documented on 68forums. |

Guys lets not spoil the GOOD discussion in here by dickering over what someone does.... if someone says the "6.8 does everything they need a 5.56 to do and better" so be it.
Dragging someones personal occupation into the thread really serves no purpose. |

i love the 6.8 concept but until ammunition becomes as availble and affordable as surplus 762x51 or 556 im having a hard time jumping on board even with all the benifits.
even with the SSA plinking ammo that is comming out somtime. you can still shoot twice the amount 556 and slghtly more 762. i would rather be able to train my ass of with a 3x more 556 then switch just yet to 6.8 |

Train, plink or whatever with your 5.56 and use the 6.8 only where and when you want. I don't hunt much but when I do I take the 6.8SPC. Last time my boys and I went hog hunting we killed 4 hogs with 5 rounds. Even counting the rounds we used to get things sighted in we spent very little on ammo. My household zombie killer is loaded with combat SSA 115 gr OTM 6.8 rounds. Sure they are expensive but so is TAP in 5.56 and if it wasn't 6.8 that's what I'd have in my weapon anyway. |
