What should I look for or where should I look to build a gnat zapper? I've shot several colt accurized that I was very impressed with, should I just get one of those or is it feasable to build one for less money that's more accurate? *I will be using this weapon for varmints- |

I don't really have an answer for you but..... When going for accuracy, these factors are most important. (probably in order): 1.Barrel. SS bbls are great for accuracy, but the type of material isn't the only thing to consider. The barrel manufacturer is just as important. Also, the profile of the bbl. Usually heavier bbls tend to be more accurate. Start with a bbl. 2. Ammo. Good quality ammo is a must. Obviously the type of ammo to use, will depend on the bbl you buy. 3. A quality trigger. I know next to nothing about triggers 4. The shooter. Lots of practice with your rig. I have heard the RRA make an excellent bbl. Check out ADCO for other options. |

I sold a couple of my old AR-15's that I tried to accurize. Here is my newest toy: S&W M&P15PC performance center gun,,,,Hopefully they did the work for me! Just got it scoped up with JP mounts and Sightron 4.5-14. Now I need to take it to the range and put it on the bench. This gun has 1 in 8 barrel, chrome bolt carrier, match trigger, receiver milled out of solid billet stock, etc. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn58/littlerascal56/DSC01647.jpg?t=1224618994 httphttp://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn58/littlerascal56/DSC01649.jpg?t=1224624877 |
| Why knock the .223. I have whacked many a prarie poodle all the way out to 500 with it? Hell last time out I was consitantly connecting at 300 and even 400 with a chromelined Bushmaster Carbine barrel. My bolt gun is 1/4 moa. It's hard to beat the good ole .223. Rock river or WOA 1/7 or 1/8 20 or 24 inch 60 grain Vmax at or about 3000 FPS. and you will have one accurate rig |
Not knocking the .223 - he mentioned "exceeding 500 yards"....to me that means past 500 yards not "all the way out to" as you mention. If you want to shoot prairie dogs out to 750 or 1,000 yards a different caliber is more desirable. I'm not saying he can't hit anything. I'm saying if he wants to hit anything that small with any consistency, he has a better chance with a different caliber. |
