What should I look for or where should I look to build a gnat zapper?

I've shot several colt accurized that I was very impressed with, should I just get one of those or is it feasable to build one for less money that's more accurate?

*I will be using this weapon for varmints-

what kind of distances are you looking at?

there are several manufacturers out there that make very accurate rifles or barrels.

Distances out to and beyond 500 yards.

If RRA is as good as anything else I'd be glad to go that route, I couldn't be happier with my Entry Tactical, I love my  TA30DOC on it too btw. :)

Is there anything out there that's supperior in accuracy?

I don't really have an answer for you but.....

When going for accuracy, these factors are most important. (probably in order):

1.Barrel. SS bbls are great for accuracy, but the type of material isn't the only thing to consider. The barrel manufacturer is just as important. Also, the profile of the bbl. Usually heavier bbls tend to be more accurate. Start with a bbl.

2. Ammo. Good quality ammo is a must. Obviously the type of ammo to use, will depend on the bbl you buy.

3. A quality trigger. I know next to nothing about triggers

4. The shooter. Lots of practice with your rig.

I have heard the RRA make an excellent bbl. Check out ADCO for other options.

Out past 500 yards for varmints you'll probably be happier with a .204 Ruger upper to use with the lower you currently have.

I sold a couple of my old AR-15's that I tried to accurize.  Here is my newest toy: S&W M&P15PC performance center gun,,,,Hopefully they did the work for me!

Just got it scoped up with JP mounts and Sightron 4.5-14. Now I need to take it to the range and put it on the bench.  This gun has 1 in 8 barrel, chrome bolt carrier, match trigger, receiver milled out of solid billet stock, etc.

Noveske or White Oak Armament barrel maybe....

For that range I would consider a different caliber as well.

Why knock the .223. I have whacked many a prarie poodle all the way out to 500 with it? Hell last time out I was consitantly connecting at 300 and even 400 with a chromelined Bushmaster Carbine barrel. My bolt gun is 1/4 moa. It's hard to beat the good ole .223. Rock river or WOA 1/7 or 1/8 20 or 24 inch 60 grain Vmax at or about 3000 FPS. and you will have one accurate rig

Not knocking the .223 - he mentioned "exceeding 500 yards"....to me that means past 500 yards not "all the way out to" as you mention.  If you want to shoot prairie dogs out to 750 or 1,000 yards a different caliber is more desirable.

I'm not saying he can't hit anything.  I'm saying if he wants to hit anything that small with any consistency, he has a better chance with a different caliber.

My bad you would be correct sir for Past 500 yards a better caliber would be called for. But .204? Wouldnt wind drift negate it's use much past 500. Past 500 even my .220 swift has problem's. Or maybe it's me

This is a hbar RRA non chrome 16" in a 1-9. I was going to upgrade my barrel
but, now,  i think im going to concentrate on shooting what i got. From zero
to 500 yards it is 11 moa on this rifle to the plate. I was extremely thrilled the
first time i heard the thud. She gets sub moa groups at 100 and my plate sits
on the ground and is 10" x 18" high. I do shoot accurate handloads. A tack driver
by definition.
btw she's got a CMC trigger that i absolutely love!!

Here's what the Federal charts say....

Not much difference between a 77 grain Sierra Match King .223 and a 39 grain .204 with relation to wind drift but the .204 is a little flatter shooting.

OK - I give...stick with a .223 and don't consider any other calibers.  Sorry for hijacking the thread

i wasn't trying to knock your educational information. I never thought to compare the ballistics on the multiple calibers. Very good idea. Where did you get that proggy by the way? I just wish i had more time and money to explore SHOOTING all the calibers.
