I am considering a J&T 16" CAR.  What is the difference in the plane "post ban" and the postban with permanent tactical brake?

What should I get?

Thanks

The brake is to help tame the recoil at the muzzle. My understanding is that it will make the report much louder, and given the extra cost, wasn't worth it in my mind. I went with the 16" CAR without the brake. FWIW, the recoil isn't bad on this caliber. You'll probably get varying opinions.

I would definitely get the brake. The J&T brake will not make the rifle much louder, if any louder. A few local guys here are using the J&T brake and I never noticed any difference.
One other note: I recently had the opportunity to see various brakes and flash suppressors demmonstated at night. The worst one I saw was probably a plain 16" barrel (no brake, no flash suppressor). There was what looked like a fireball about 2 feet in diameter exiting the muzzle. Although the various brakes are not flash suppressors, it did help considerably to reduce this huge fireball.
The purpose of a brake on an AR is not about recoil in the sense of taming brutal recoil. It is about getting the sights back on target for follow up shots as quickly as possible. And there is a definite difference when quickly firing a braked rifle and a non-braked rifle when doing things such as double taps.

Get the brake, look's cool....if you are looking for something quite buy a red-ryder...

Personally, I would skip the break.  If it is a larger diameter than the barrel (which almost all brakes are), it will make it a real pain to remove the gas block/front sight, add a free float handguard, etc.

Recoil on a .223 is nothing, really, even on a light rifle.

Only in the situation that fizz' refers to would I avoid the brake.  It (J&T's) is barely louder than standard muzzle and does help with recovery time.  It also helps a post ban look more like a pre-ban.  Because I wanted to create and AR clone of the M-16 I had in service, I have the 20" expedition.  I am extremely happy with it.  So, only if you intend to install a free float, skip the brake.  Otherwise get it.

I've been looking at different breaks and the only one I found so far that accually looks like a M-16/AR-15 preban break is made by Wilson. If you know of another one please let me know because I plan on getting one for my 20" A-2 kit that I ordered from J&T when it arrives.
