Long time reader but Noob poster.  Does anyone have any recommendations on which slot to use when mounting a vertical foregrip on the quad rail?

Yep. Short answer: wherever you want.

Other answer: How long is your rail? Do you have a light you want to articulate? Is it a grip-pod or going to be used in that capacity as a monopod? Generally speaking, you want to keep it pretty far foward and pull firmly into the pocket of your shoulder; this helps when you drive the weapon from target to target. Also, it's better to use the grip more as a hand-stop or a reference point, instead of using like a "broom handle." A good grip with your support hand should look kind of like when you hold a pistol, thumb indexed along the bore. Some people reach over the top of the rail with their thumb, with a "claw" grip.

Another answer: you might not even need one at all. Try it and find out.

Depends on how you hold your rifle.I don't use my FG like a shovel handle ,I use it as a hand stop...
