Just curious what most have for there "go to" gun.A simple lite weight iron sight's,or optics,lights,rails....After building my M-4 with "everything",i'm wondering if a simpler gun would be better. She's got some "weight" to her .

I have one built with all the tacticool crap.  But I find myself gravitating to my A1 with just a TLR-1 on it.

I guess it's going to be up to the individual.  I have a KISS AR carbine with a lightweight 16" 1/7 barrel.  Standard non detachable A2 sights and that is nice and light.  I got the Mid length with lot of tacticool accessories and it's a bit heavier.  I say get both.

I have a tacti-kiss rifle myself

Stag Model 1
MI free-float rail
Basic CCA stubby VFG(cheap but tough)
CCA stock saddle
LMT BUIS(built like a brick shithouse and same as A2 adjustments
Houge grip.

Only thing I'm adding for now is a Badger latch and sopmod extractor upgrade.

Only did stuff that makes a bit more accurate and sturdy for the VFG and some comfort/ergo mods. Changed the handle to the BUIS to cut a bit of the weight added with the FF.  Even spaced out the XTR panels to three per side to use the least needed to protect the rails.  I bought the CCA stuff to try out the idea of a stubby VFG and SOPMOD type cheek-weld, and they plenty tough so just called it done.

The other ones I'm getting parts to build or plan to build are:

Retro A1 rifle
Ultra-light truck gun(pencil barrel/cav arms lower)
And a tacti-cool special-probably going to spring for the SBR for that one...

And somewhere down the line either a PTR-91 or .308 AR with the G3 mag lower...

There is no sensible reason to not have a light and aimpoint on an AR.

Since I live in a condo, my go-to is a 1911, not the AR.

I have a decked out ar that has everything on Larue levers. If I feel saucy I keep all the junk on. If Im doing quick and light I take everything off. Its the versitility that wins over all

Well, good thing about AR's, there are plenty of solutions available to add JUST the optic and/or JUST the light.

I just ordered a flat top KISS carbine with just 1 piece of (ultralightweight) tacticool on it - a tritium stripe front sight post (upper left)!

A bit of both if you have more than one AR. For serious shooting, a light, & Aimpoint or EOTech, are in order....or somewhere in between.

Kiss with an optic and BUIS...

I don't see the big attraction to rails.  maybe 2 small ones besides the flat-top... but 4 full-length rails with lights, laz0rs, vertical grips etc.....  Doesn't do it for me.

ETA: my current build project (and only AR) is an 18" middy 6.5 grendel with a FF tube and fixed 10x scope.  Will probably put some irons or a dot optic on it.  That's pretty KISS to me.  A little more than the bare necessities, but still not bulky. Good to go to atleast 600m.  Ah yes, and a more manly cartridge

As far as I'm concerned, this is KISS:

ETA:  Oops, posted the wrong pic at first.

No extraneous wires hanging about, effective from 0-300m, no unnecessary junk.  It's simple and effective.  IMHO, for serious use KISS is a primary optic, BUIS, and a light.  Yes, others have done without in the past, and so could I if I needed to, but I don't.

Any of my ARs with less are clones:

Knock out a pin, remove windage knob assy.  Unscrew that center screw that the aperture is screwed through by.  put in the new aperture, screw that screw, replace the knob assembly and put the pin back in.

your 6400/6921 is perfect. Simple. Add a surefire m951 on there, and your gtg. Dont you have like 2 + surefires?

Actually, that was the wrong picture.

The right one's up now, as for lights, I think I'm pretty well covered, I've got two 951s, a 962, an M600A, a 660 Classic, a 6P in a Weaver ring, and G2 in a TRG mount... I think that's all of them.

That's what I have done.

Started out with a middy, and then a middy with rails, and then a middy with rails, an Eotech, forward grip, and light...

It has gone through multiple incarnations, but right these days my go-to carbine is a GAU-5 clone with a slickside upper, NDA16A1 lower, and pencil barrel chopped to 14.7".

Now that it's back in one piece I just need to drop the light on it an it's good to go.

These light little carbines sure do handle well, and as much as I liked that middy with the gear, in the end I'm happy that I parted it out and slowly replaced the components to build this lightweight.

Sure I don't think you have to bolt that stuff to every sp-1 or varmint rifle in the house, but this "tacticool" and "crap hanging off rails" stuff makes blood just about squirt out my ears. Ask what the "crap" is and inevitably you get a lecture about how lights give your position away or "batteries can fail"

My go to has an Surefire M951 and a FUG on a LaRue 7.0 and an Eotech 512 with LaRue mount on teh flat top

In case of an Eotech failure I have a LaRue fixed BUIS and FSB so if needed, I don't have to flip up my BUIS.  Not that flipping a sight takes forever but in the case that I NEEDED my sight, I feel more comfortable with them already being in place ready to use as is.

I am in the process of equipping many of my ARs with lights. Depending on the sight system / Optic  it dictates how big of a light.

As far as the "Go To Gun" it should be the one you shoot, train and trust the most. Training includes shooting in low light conditions.

my work rifle.  only thing not shown is my 3 point mamba sling.

is it tacticool bc I have a vfg and a light.  I don't think so, I use the light was we clear buildings and I am not aware of a way to hold my huge work flashlight and my rifle with any degree of effectiveness.  Didn't use to have the vfg, but after a 5 hours perimeter hold, got it and was pleased last week on similar call.  So, it stays.  Lazers and a bunch of other fancy stuff, not going to happen.

I need to buy more rifles and ammo first!  haha

god I need a rich uncle or something.

My tactikool rifle is almost too heavy with everything mounted but it is definately managable. The quick release mounts on the scope and bi-pod make it a breeze to drop what you don't need. I find myself grabbing for my AK alot too...

needs an Aimpoint Micro or EOTech & it's a confirmed kiss

all of my AR's are SBR's with either 11.5" or 10.5" barrels. i have several with optics, VFG's, lights, etc., and several with plain old CAR handguards and stock with A1 or C7 uppers.

i shoot my KISS guns 80% of the time. they are fun, light, accurate, fast on target, etc. that said, for HD or if TSHTF, i'd use one of my gadget guns. a light is 100% necessary for HD.

Nice setup, Augee.

Reminds me of an excellent thread DM1975 wrote up on this topic a while back.  Basically, a sling, white light, and good red-dot are force multipliers, if not required to be as effective as possible.  As with anything there are trade-offs going with less, or adding more.

I have 2 AR's. An M4 and a 20" with full stock. The only thing I put on them is a light and a sling.

Lets face the simple fact here KISS for self defense is retro...................

I have alot of experience with black rifles in every kind of enviroment you can think of,

red dots are the key to low light shooting try to shoot irons past 10 yards at night.

Lights are great for home defense, and house work even in the day time there are alot of dark closets, most other uses they are no good for and a hand held light would be better.

visable Lasers are of dubious value I have only found them to be good in doors or in low light at ranges less than 25 yards.

IR lasers require Night vision however this is state of the art ..

But heres the deal there is this company called Larue, they make these QD mounts so that a tricked out rifle can be made a kiss rifle in about 1 min and all the items will be zeroed when you put them back on.

Rails with nothing on them is still KISS IMHO.

so SHTF you can go KISS, red dot only, or NVG, red dot, and IR laser.

Home defense anything works better than a bat, but I would recommend a light around 120 lumens, and a red dot.

Fast and instinctive.  Those are original HK416 sights, so they sit 3/8" lower than standard rail-mount sights so it just requires a slight change in cheek weld.

I recommend them.

On my longer carbines I use Troy sights, except for the LMT BUIS on my Mk18 Mod0.
