so a friend shipped me some mags he wasn't using. And as I opened them up to check them out. I noticed something wierd.

Here's the baseplate-
BINGHAM LTD.
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA

Now they appear to be USGI construction. Aluminum 30 rounders with black followers, 6 weld marks on front and on back.

Standard everything. Except for one thing- A small round hole in the left side of the mag (if it was inserted in the rifle).

Anyone know what this is for? I've never seen or even heard of it. Is this a manufacturing thing? Or did someone drill a hole in each of these (they're only in two) for some unknown reason.

Load the mag all the way up, does it show a bullet through the hole?

Okay, just loaded it.

on 28 rounds in, you can see the bottom of the first round in, and the baseplate.
29 rounds in, you can see the whole first round in there
30 rounds in you can see the 1st and 2nd round in 1/2 and 1/2 in the hole.

So by powers of deduction, and a shove in the right direction from M4_Aiming_at_U, I shall now assume these mags have the hole to see if it's full or not.

anyone else have some of these mags?

They are drainage holes drilled by Seals, so that when they go swimming, the little fish don't get stuck.
(Its a PETA thing!)

Bingham,LTD is a small import-export firearms, and accessories company. Their big claim to fame was a switchblade knife called the Guardfather. It was banned from importation sometime back.

I suspect that these mags are post ban that someone has drilled where the date stamp was placed.  Some mags, I don't exactly recall which one's, Okay IIRC, early on after the ban had only a date stamp such as "2/95" to indicate the date of manufacture.

I've seen quite a few examples of people drilling out this spot on the mag and explaining the hole as a "witness hole" so that you can count the rounds in the magazine.  Similar to the holes on the back of most pistol mags.

As far as the base plate goes I guess its just some aftermarket plate to further disguise the mag as being pre ban when IMO its post ban.

HTH,

Rob

I doubt that's it.

My friend who sent them to me bought them from a store in '89. He's had them ever since and never bought anymore. He recently sold of his AR to get an M1A, so gave away most of his AR stuff.

ETA- And this hole is too small to have been covering up a date stamp.

This is almost certainly a USGI contract mag with a custom floorplate.  This company never had a USGI mag manufacturing contract.

So similar to seeing a USGI Bushmaster mag? Just a floorplate thrown on after the fact?
