Hey guys, I feel like this is a stupide question but...

A friend just went to a VERY well known shooting school and mentioned to the instructor that he wanted to build up a gun with a threaded barrel possibly for a muzzle break or eventually a suppressor.
The instructor suggested not threading the barrel because the additional laws regarding a threaded barrel. He said something about government keeping track of it or registering it.
Now, I have a couple of guns here in the closet that I had the barrels threaded on and I have never heard such a thing before (except in California).

Has something happened that I am not aware of or is this well known bigshot smoking crack?

Thanks

Check your Hometown Forum and see what your state laws are.

It is a big long barrel..2o" I think.

I am not referring to a state law. I am speaking of Federal law.

It requires approval from your Chief of Police, seven forms to be filled out by your dealer and gunsmith, a $50 application fee, plus opening an insurance escrow account of $1 Million in liability.....

NOT!

You can have a threaded barrel on any gun. It just depends on what you stick on the threads that involves federal laws.
I don't know how much your friend spent for that class, but I bet he paid plenty for it.
And came away with a load of BS misinformation.

No federal law about threads on a barrel.  Typical "gun expert" crap left over from the ban days.  Threads were one of the "no-no" evil features back during the ban.
