I'm curious if anyone has a handle on the technical name of the threaded pins used for the bolt catch release on DPMS pattern 308 rifles?

I can find these cheaply enough on ebay, but I'm sure they are sold commercially as something else (as a non-firearm related fastener).

Any ideas?

I looked through "threaded pins" on McMaster-Carr, but no luck.

Thanks,

G.

They are a either a special machine screw. Or a turned-down 6-32 allen drive set screw.
mcmaster set screws

Doubt you will find a industrial bulk source...unless you ask dealers online where they are getting them.
My guess would be some are USA made...some are made in China.

Although there are some 5-40s out there, the majority are 6-32.

Thanks.

BTW, I get these pins off ebay for $8.99 for a pack of 3 (cheap enough).

These same types of pins are used in RC cars and planes.

The technical size is M5 threaded pin; I just can't find them for sale anywhere in bulk.

I tap the forward hole of the bolt catch pin (6-32) on all my receivers; it's not that I can't drive a pin out (I custom made a removal punch), it's just that it's so much easier to do with a threaded pin (and why would I remove a bolt catch? Only if I wanted to change the mag catch and the geometry prevents it from being loosened because it hits the bolt catch lever).

I'd like to have a pack of 25.

Another option would be to use a smooth pin that drops in, and is then captured by a simple set screw.
