| I think I've finally pared down the "gotta spend money on this first" priority list and am at a point where I'd like to "fix" my Bushmaster Shorty, bought back in '02. It was my first - and so far only - AR so I'm not sure what damage was wrought by the AWB. There appears to be sort of a step-down from the barrel thickness about an inch from the muzzle. I assume that's where the threading on a "normal" AR15 would start. Did Bushmaster just grind off the threads to be compliant? If so, is there enough metal for a gunsmith to rethread it so I can attach a f/s? Or should I just leave it as-is and spend the money on a new barrel or complete upper? |

Had the same issue with a post-ban Colt. It had the step-down area near the muzzle that you describe. If you measure the step-down area you will probably find it to be 1/2 inch. The "proper" thread for a flash hider is 1/2-28. One half inch diameter, with 28 threads per inch. I had mine threaded by a smith for $100, and an A-2 flash hider installed for $7.00. The barrel needs to be removed and threaded on a lathe for a proper job, as opposed to using a threading die. The only risk is that a ham-handed smith could bugger up the crown on your barrel, and/or screw up the threading. A new barrel, properly threaded, with a flame hider, installed by a smith would undoubted cost more than $107. |

Adco will thread a barrel for $65.00 according to their website. You'd have to take the barrel off & put back on yourself, which is not hard at all. If you sent them the whole upper, I think there is a extra charge for removing & installation. I've never heard anything bad about them, it's worth a shot. Adco Firearms Shop Services page |
Bought my post-ban Bushy in '03. Been thinking about the ADCO thread job for the past few years. Got it done this past winter. Turn-around was fast and the work was great. Had him put an A2 birdcage on there as well. Great work. Great service. Great price! |
