Over the last months I have been putting together (thanks to the in-stock threads in the Build It Yourself Forum) my very first AR-15. Of course now that I have completed my build I would like to go out and shoot it. Are there any tips/tricks that I should know/do for shooting a virgin AR-15? Best practices? I have read the cleaning and maintenance manuals linked on this site. I'm more talking about things that an experienced user would watch for to make sure that the weapon is operating properly. Thanks for the help!!

Just clean it and then shoot it, that's all there is to it!

1. Load mag
2. Insert mag and cycle bolt
3. ????
4. Profit

That's pretty much it.

Lube properly;

Check the markings on the barrel to see if it's chambered for 5.56 or .223. You can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber, But not the other way around.

Load one round in the mag. Hit the bolt release to chamber the round. Then fire. Bolt should lock back on a empty chamber. Do two or three times to make sure the gas system is running right.

Then have some fun and sight that baby in.

Load one round in mag per shot then step up to two and three then full mags. Make sure everything is functioning properly. Nothing like an oops and first trigger pull full auto mag dump to wake you up...

If you want to be a girl you can go get it check by a gunsmith to see if the spacings are correct. Of you want to be a man just go out and load one round in a mag and shoot. Thats why I did. Loaded one round and made sure it fired, then about 3, then a full mag. It worked fine.

Ha ha ...given the quality of parts nowadays (broken bolts, etc) I would be more inclined to put the rifle in a rest (or sandbag it) and tie a string to the trigger for remote firing.

lol.. made me laugh though.. Im with the guys above, 1 rd in mag to ensure gas pressure is correct and that its locking the bolt carrier back. Otherwise it should be good, the throats ect should all be well within spec on any barrel.

I would top off a pmag then chamber a round then top off the pmag again to see if that works. Next I would make sure it can be chambered with the charging handle/bolt release, and the see if the bolt locks back on last round. After that if everything works then I would zero the gun and shoot the heck out of it.

Have fun and post pics.
