What is the better plating when it comes to bolts/carriers and why?

The standard phosphate finish.

+1 No need for anything else.  One disadvantage is that the TiN and Chrome finishes actually shrug off lubes, rather than carrying them like a phosphate finish.  Spend your $$ elsewhere.

In general what would you say is the best bolt/carrier available?

Colt.

The L-W looks even better (they have some neat design enhancements) but they use a different steel and I have not see any data (emperical or subjective) that says they are 'better'.  Colt's bolts are Proof fired then Magnetic Particle tested and are made from tool steel.  They have a track record of going the distance.

Are the Colts or LW's available aftermarket or just in complete rifles? If so where can i get one?

Both are available aftermarket

Specialized Armament Warehouse has Colt bolts/Bolt Carriers.

L-W sells their enhanced bolts and enhance bolt-carriers from their website.  Check with them in their forum in the Industry section.

I prefer Young Mfg or Les Baer chrome carriers and bolts.  Both are made by Young to the same patent number.

What is young mfg website?  Just youngmfg.com  ... went there and they don't reference AR parts.

Young's are hard to find. I have seen them at model 1 sales, you might look there. Brownells sells Les Baers.
