Ok so I've built a stripped M&P(5.56) & DPMS(308) one is carbine the other is heavy barrel.
I want so much to build a Monolithic 16" middy with a DD rifle length hand guard. My dealer has a stripped POF lower with a Sundevil monolithic upper, both have the nickel coating. So, do I sell one or both along with a couple handguns to build a one off high end AR? OR, keep them till I've saved some coin? I was always told,"Never sell anything" & it's tough to part with them when you've built it from the ground up. This stuff is addictive

I like things to match as much as possible...personally, I wouldn't sell what you have for that particular combination...maybe SUN DEVIL/SUN DEVIL, but not mismatched receivers...even though it doesn't make any real difference. Just personal preference or a specific snafu you've run into during a mismatched build? |

I think a lot of the problems posted on boards like this are due to mismatched parts.
You see some build lists and there aren't two parts from the same manufacturer in it. I have an engineering/manufacturing background and even though all of the parts may be within spec, sometimes, when you stack 'em together they just don't fit/work. I try to keep like parts like...bolt (at least, if not entire BCG) from same maker as barrel, lower receiver-LPK, etc. Am I being anal? Absolutely...and all my guns run just fine. And before someone posts well I mixed all sorts of parts and my gun(s) run just fine, I didn't say they won't, I just think you are (however slightly) more likely to have a problem. There is nothing wrong with either of those recievers, but (especially in the case of billet) the upper/lower not being from the same maker, besides coloration (if you care) the surfaces may not line up exactly due to wall thicknesses, etc. Nothing wrong with that, but if you're trying to build a super top end rifle, it might be a consideration. |

I think this build will get a little more critiquing & research before I jump into it.
After reading this I feel matched parts are common sense, guess I got jazzed by the monolithic upper & POF lower. It's like driving by a GTO with a 4/S sign, it looks good at a distance but when you stop to look it's a rust bucket. Thanx for the great info. |

If you've already gone through the hassel of finding/making yoiur guns NJ-legal I wouldn't bother selling them. Save up if you must and if you still want that nickel build when you have the cash, go for it. I'm actually looking to relocate to Oregon so I can enjoy some Class 3 stuff & 30 rd mags, this state is a F'n joke. It may be prudent to hold off till we've made the move & do a wicked, evil build, SBR & all the trimmings.
