OK, here is the deal. I have an all LMT 16" defender 2000 and a Stag stripped lower to work with. My LMT has functioned flawlessly for over a thousand rounds but when I look at it, it just seems 1.5" too long. I am wondering what some of your experiences have been with cutting down, re-crowning and installing a perm phantom are. Is it going to be worth the $ or should I just get the 14.5" upper for my lonely Stag lower and call it a day?

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read and reply. Here is a little gun pron for your troubles.

I am bored as all get out on this floating fortress,
Squid

Send it to ADCO, their shop turn around is 2 to 3 days.  Their work is excellent and they stand by their product.  I have sent them 5 or 6 uppers to cut, crown, and perm attach a flash supressor.  The total time from mailing out to return is usually 7 calendar days!  My latest was a 6920 cut to 16.1 inches overall including a perm attached A2.  IMHO Steve and ADCO is the best decision you can make when cutting a barrel.  PIC of my 6920.

I can't see photobucket on the boat (tinypic.com works though). Does ADCO also open up the gas port? Does the cutting cause the chrome lining to flake or chafe? Has anyone noticed a depreciation in accuracy after the circumcision?

I appreciate the replies. Keep them coming.

Plus UNO, Just do it.....

The upper above was originally 14.5 inches and I cut it down to 11.5 inches.  I worked on the gas port and brought it up to spec and the upper runs like a charm.  No failures or malfunctions whatsoever and the chrome lining is in perfect shape with no flaking.
Hope that helps.

Not to hijack th ehtread but.... i currently have a RRA Tactical CAR-A4 16" and am going to get the Primary Weapons FSC556 put on it.. now since im in NJ it has to be perm attached anyway...

my question is this: where do you measure from to make sure it is 16.1".... im assuming from the end of the perm attached devise at the muzzle to where?

unload/make clear.
close the bolt
drop a rod down the barrel until it touches the breechface (bolt)
mark the rod where it exits the flash suppressor/muzzle device
remove rod and mesure

there you go!

I am not sure if the gas port is opened or not, however I put 500+ rounds through my 6920 in one range session this month without a single malfunction.  Incidentally, this was this rifles first time being fired / break-in.

Properly cutting and re-crowning the barrel will have no effect on the chrome lining.

The re-crowning you will receive from a quality job will increase the accuracy of your rifle, although I can't tell the difference, the stick is already more accurate than I am.

IM me your email address if you want to email you a pic of my ADCO cut rifle.

I guess the real question is: is it better to cut it down to 14.5 and have a perm FH installed or cut it down to 14.7 and have a non-permed FH.
Which way is better/less hassle?

Please elaborate. Either way it is gonna have to be pinned if the overall length is 16". The difference between 14.5 and 14.7 is the type of FH i would be able to have pinned. It' s just that I see the 14.5" m4 profile bbls all day and go home to my 16" bbl.

I guess I am looking for some actual expiriences or AR15 Barrels to jump in and give me a warm fuzzy feeling before i go and hack up a flawlessly functioning rifle. Thanks again, arfcom hivemind.

Ooops, you're right, 14.7 will still need to be pinned.
