[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Too much scope?

Would a 5x-15x 40mm scope be too much for varmint/predator/range shooting? I'm thinking that the shots taken under any of these apps would be no longer than 250 yds.

The build I'm working on will be a plain 'ol 20" A3 upper, no bull barrel, free floating or fluting. If that is too much scope for my needs, what would be some better optics for that build and usage?

Around here the most popular varmint (mostly coyote) scope is a 4.5-14x or something of similar power. I would not get anything less powerful.

Even when calling for coyotes? I'm just afraid of spending too much $$$ on a scope that is too powerful for the shots I'll be taking.

I just mounted and zeroed a Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10 x 40 on my LTR. It comes with target knobs and Mil-dots. I am very impressed with the the quality of the optics and the click adjustments seem very positive and well defined. It compares well with a Leupold VX-III I have at about 1/3 the price.

I'd say that you're right in the correct range of magnification. Varmints are SMALL at 250 yards, and since this isn't a defensive/duty/combat rifle, the additional magnification is not a penalty.

Sounds like you're in the right range to me.

3.5-10 or 4.5-14 would be my choice.

Even when the shots are routinely under 100 yards, we do 7x during the day and 11x at night.
