can you make them yourself? is it just some sort of heating paint that you can dip the tip in

Yes you can 'make' them yourself, if you use tracer bullets to reload your own ammo.  The tracing part is a compound that is inside the bullet, and is ignited at the base when the round is fired.

Just put flourecent orange or red paint on the tip and it'll trace as bright as the sun!!
You just have to make sure it's the special tracer paint, though...

There are no national laws restricting sale, possession, etc. of tracer rounds, but you should check on your local laws to be sure. ...Especially those of you who live in the Peoples Republic of California.

I've got a PDF at home on how to make tracer ammo if you want it. Its a lot of work. and some of the chemicals are hard to get .

much easier to buy surplus tracers and reload them.

if you do, trust me on this, get IMR 4064 powder.

I have tried many powders, this lights them much better than even the talon tracers you get.

It's hot enough to light even the most stubborn tracer.

Check the reloading forum for links to places that sell them.
