You guys use them in any particular manner?

For example, in a 30rnd mag:

top
22rnds
3rnds tracer
5 rnds at the bottom

One mag dedicated as tracers, such as a 20rndr?

If you do shoot tracers, be very careful of your surroundings. I’ve seen more than one range fire because of them.

In the military a range fire is no problem. The range goes Cold and you call Range Control. They put the fire out, and it's business as usual.

The most recent range fire I saw was on a private range. That one was not so fun.

I can't remember exactly, but I think the military standard is 1 tracer and 4 ball inbetween, with 3 tracers at the bottom to hopefully let you know you are empty.

fire was a concern.  Not so much in the summer here where its raining so often but paper targets and dry brush during the dry season.

Just wondering if you guys set up several mags with tracer for HD or what have you.

I’ve been out now for 15 years. One of our current service members might be better qualified to answer that question.

Pretty basic load when I was playin in the sand box...except I didnt use the top three as tracers, just regular ball ammo.

I have done that over in the hot place,,I had a couple of mags with nothing but tracers, for target ID. Tell my team to watch my tracers and they know the target area...

I loaded my last 5 rnds in my mag as tracers to help me tell when I was about to be out of ammo.

I carried a Lancer L5 mag with tracers to mark targets, and the bottom two rounds in each magazine to let me know I was out.

We use them 1 in 4 w/o the top three or bottom four. This of course is just one .mil SOP and can't speak for all of them.

1 in 4 ?  As in 3 ball and one tracer?

Anyone purchase any tracers from HI VEE website?
9/9/2008 7:41:10 PM EDT

We had a mag with just tracers in the humvee turret.  It helped with the ROEs, as we had to shoot pyro and then warning shots at vehicles that didn't stop.  Tracers helped the folks getting shot at, know they are getting shot at, so they would then stop their vehicle and/or pull off the road.  Hardly ever had to shoot though, as pen flares and popups usually got their attention.

One of my guys went through, I don't know like ten, saw drums and pulled all of the tracers off of them, and linked them all together.  We never got to shoot it though, it would have been awesome!!

Question: How effective/useful is using tracer ammo mixed w/ ball ammo in civilian single-fire AR-15s?  I thought Tracer use in the military was useful to aid in target acquisition soley due to the rate of fire with full auto types.

+1

The only times I knew for certain we were being engaged was because of tracers and of course finding the occasional holes on post flight...

I wouldn’t waste my time with them if I were buying…
