Well I tried the search and still not sure, do you think they (tracers) damage the barrel? In theory the rear of the bullet ignites after it leaves the barrel so why would it?

No, the common consensus is that tracers won't harm the barrel. You are right about them lighting up after they leave the bbl. But even if they DID burn in the barrel, the contact time is so short that they would have no time to heat the barrel appreciably. Compared to the powder load, they have very little stuff in them.

ETA but make DARNED SURE they are legal in your area! They may be illegal to OWN, let alone SHOOT.

They won't hurt your barrel but be damn careful when shooting them in dry conditions.  I caught my range on fire twice using 7.62 tracers out of my M1A and HK-91.  THey will start fires easily.

Tracers are lit when leave the bbl...not 'after', it takes time for us to see them...how do they ignite after?

If you have a good chrome lined bbl, I wouldn't worry about it.

As I said I don't know much about them, I was told they ignite after they leave the barrel. Could it be phospherous? that may explain why they have to leave the barrel to ignite.

How about the gas tube/key/bolt?  Does tracer residue induce corrosion in any of the system that handles gas?

I think a high speed video of some tracers being fired out of a rifle would be interesting to see.

I don't have any evidence of if they do hurt it or don't, either way, I just make sure to finish the range session with some non tracer ammo and call it good to go.

If it makes you feel better......
shoot some non-tracers when you are finished..... and/or clean the bore
