Waaaay out here in the realm of possibility of ever taking advantage of it, but does anybody load their magazines with a few tracers at the bottom so they know when they're out?

"You'll let the bad guy know you're out too..."

"Tracers are only for marking targets..."

"You'll burn out your barrel..."

"Useless until you're shooting out to 100m..."

"You'll start a fire..."

"Aren't tracer illegal?..."

There, I think that covers the coming responses.

Yes, I have a few tracers. No, I don't have mags loaded with them. To be honest I've never even shot any.

And that fire will be a looooong way away too.

I have about 1500 Federal XM856 rounds that I load into some magazines every now and then...mostly just when I have some newbies with me because they think they are very cool.  I usually only shoot them in the wet season here in Phoenix because, as stated, they can start a fire...I've never had that happen with them though (however I DID start a fire with some incendiary rounds...that was quickly put out though...)

Nothing kicks in the pucker factor like having one of your tracers start a fire on a live range 700M out. Had it happen.

They are good for seeing where your rounds are really impacting when shooting machineguns or rifles at long distance, good for starting fires, and good for seeing how many of your rounds ricochet.

When did this happen, and why are they still selling them???

I shoot tracers for fun depending on weather I try and not shoot them when it's dry.

Hypothetical response to thread.

Tracers are a no-go in some municipalities.

I was just being a smart elic.  Yall have got some cool tracer pics.  Only other smart elic commet I've got to make is.  Don't put tracer rodunds in the botoom of your mag to tell if your about to be out.  Learn to count the rounds.  I have problems counting my rounds when I get past 10 since I have to take my shoes off.  Then when I hit 20 I'm screwed

I keep tracers for night firing. I do enjoy shooting at night on occasion. I currently have about 3k in tracers. I only load them in mags with a ring of red electrical tape near the bottom. That way I don't grab the wrong mag by accident. In a tactical situation, one could use tracers to direct the fire of other weapons onto a target. For me, they are for fun more than anything.

Oh yeah?  I can count to 21!  Except in really cold weather...

To the OP, no I don't.  I know I'm out when the rifle doesn't go bang.  I could never count rounds, and probably never will be able to.  Practice fast mag changes behind cover and concealment if you're really worried about always staying topped off.  Here's an idea, load up the middle part of your mag with tracers, I'll let you fill in the rest.

Secondly, I get from the tone of your post that you're a civilian.  Most stateside gunfights don't take place outside of 50 yards, though there are exceptions.  I'd love to see the sorry SOB who nails a burglar at 100+ yards with 30 rounds of ammo, the last few being tracers, and explain self defense to the local DA.

Not sure about rifles, but when I shoot tracers from my pistol, I can't see the trace if I'm using the sights.  Only way for me to see them is to raise my head up and kinda point shoot, even at night.
Maybe rifle tracers are brighter.
