I'd like to give a rifle (lever-action .22) to an in-law, but he's in another state, so I understand I'd have to make the transfer through a FFL holder. Question: does that mean I have to take it to a FFL holder here, they ship it to a FFL dealer there, who makes the transfer, or can I ship it to the FFL holder there myself? |

I’m no firearms transfer expert, but when I sold a rifle out of state I had to obtain a signed copy of the FFL of the dealer I was sending the rifle to, then mailed the rifle directly to him. Packaged with the rifle was all the pertinent info on the buyer so that the FFL could contact the buyer upon receipt of the rifle. I would venture to guess that your situation would be about the same. |
| Make sure your in-law finds a dealer in his state that will receive from an individual. Although federal law allows FFLs to receive firearms from anyone in any state, many will only receive in guns from other FFLs. That's not the law, it's just what many of them prefer. Despite what many people think, you are not required to get a copy of his FFL nor is he required to give you one. He is only required to give a copy to another dealer when he receives a gun from them. Best of luck. |
