I came across 5 sets of triangle handguards locally.  I am going to build a retro and keep one set for that.  They are all new takeoffs from a local PD.  Is there anything special I should look for in the set I keep?  I want to build an M16a1 as issued in the 70s.

Green ones. Brown ones. No drain holes.

Smarter people will tell you more.

1.  What "retro" are you thinking of building?
2.  Post photos of each set, inside and outside.

Building an M16A1 as issued in the 70's is going to be a good starter project. Those parts should be easy enough to track down. Or easier I should say than 60's.

Post pics of those HGs too.

My step dad spent 1970-71 at Bien Hoa, so my build is based are the M16 he was issued.  Below are the pictures of the handguards.  None of them have any chips or cracks and the marks on them are from the electrical tape they wrapped them with when I got the sets.

Very nice, I remember when you could find nice handguards like those.
Would love to find a nice pair of triangles one of these days.

these are the newest ones produced with the drainhole and L/R stamped.  would be correct for a 70s m16a1.  they do look to be in good condition.  some wd40 will take that tape residue off.
